James Dobson's organization "Focus on the Family" and Pastor Rick Warren's book "The Purpose Driven Life" are part of a long legacy of programs featured in William Graebner's book The Engineering of Consent: Democracy and Authority in Twentieth-Century America. Graebner describes the history of public relations and propaganda, and its use to distort the public perception of freedom by targeting children in school. Graebner also mentions such publications as Dr. Spock's book Baby and Child Care, still in print at Amazon.com.

Time to re-evaluate my up-bringing. Are there any more examples of groups trying to teach your children for you? Scouts groups?
