And I understand that I'm more picky than most people.  I just can't stand egotism, meanness, or stupidity.

Thanks Ruth.  Yes, I did mean the characters, not the actors.  If I had to blame someone, it would probably be the director.  It's usually the director that makes the final decisions.

It was not so much "meanness" as 1960's attempts at a little humor, and Spock was supposed to be half-human, a graduate of Starfleet Academy, and used to being around humans, or he wouldn't have been the First Officer.  Or a personal friend of Capt. Kirk.

If the actors had strong objections to anything in the scripts, they had the right to have it removed or changed at any time.

A close friend of mine worked on TOS from the first pilot episode to the very last....He was DeForrest Kelley's stand-in, a "permanent extra," and an amateur photographer.  I used to see him, and talk to him, at the rink at night, and the only static he ever mentioned was the coolness between Shatner and Takei, and Bill's own bitterness when they hired Walter Koenig to take his place at the navigation console.

You could ask Bjo Trimble....she actually spent time on the set.  I didn't...I had to work during the daytime.

Idaho Spud made it clear that he disliked character's actions and dialogue, not the actors. Meanness was written into the script and approved by the director and studio head. *sigh*

Spud, "mean"?  They were working from scripts written by somebody else....they were/are professionals.  Actors.  that's what they DO!

I always despised The captain's and doctor's small minded behavior toward Spock too, Idaho Spud.

As I said before, I enjoyed the Spock character, but not as much as some of you.  I think that's due to my irritation of some of the other characters actions and dialog.

I was often irritated by the doctor's meanness to Spock, but the captain annoyed me the most, especially when played by William Shatner.  He often acted so emotionally and stupid, I wouldn't have voted for him as dog catcher, let alone a Star Ship Captain.

And here is a too-brief conversation between William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy on Shatner's Raw Nerve:

A|N's own Steve Shives gave a most thoughtful memoriam for Leonard Nimoy:
