If your views are like most of the thoughts expressed on A/N, that must be a very bizarre experience!
I am a closet atheist...and Director of Music at a United Methodist church! I haven't shared this with my wife yet, but I think I will soon. I've lost my nerve so many times. The biggest reason I haven't revealed my atheism is that it would have a significant negative impact on our family's finances. I owe it to my wife and kids to keep my church job for now, until I can figure something else out. Good to be here, though, for the opportunity to release some of the "internal pressure"!
Hey everyone! I'm a new member. I'm glad I found this place. Being an atheist is hard for me because no one knows. My family is pentecostal. I'm purposely keeping it secret until I'll have the ability to move out, in fear of how my family will react, no doubt extremely negatively. I fear most telling my dad (former pastor, bible college professor, as fundamentalist as they get). I DO want to tell him eventually, but like I said when I can move out, to avoid being forced to go to camps and conferences to get "converted back". I can fake it and "go through the motions" but it can be REALLY hard when it's stuff I secretly oppose (homophobia, street evangelism, etc.). I think I could recover from being ostracized, but not as a minor with no where to go. I'd love for anyone to message me with advice, if you wanna here more about my background, or just to chat! :)
I am completely in the closet except to my very Christian girlfriend (we're fine and plan to make it work). I want to come out but I doubt that I ever will. It would result in the complete loss of my family, my girlfriend's family, 90% of my friends, and the majority of my acquaintances would shun me. Depressing yes, but better than delusion. Luckily, I am an introvert so I think I would survive coming out. My girlfriend, however, probably wouldn't survive emotionally.
I am partially out. A few people know ... not all of my family does.
I came out late last year: http://emilyhasbooks.com/seven-year-twitch
Mark I live in Iraq and as long as I 'm under cover nothing bad happens :), thanks
I am from Muslim background, I don't really know if I am completely undercover or partly , i have to wear scarf but everybody knows my lack of faith, I don’t say that I’m non-believer to them but don’t say the opposite either, always have troubles with my mom and my family they call me communist (they consider this as an insult) and Satanist..... So far I consider myself agnostic.... I am happy that I found some place where I can speak my mind
I feel you. I've been atheist for about 2 years and I have to hide it from my family. My brother attempted to be an atheist when he was 13 (i'm older), and my family reacted by calling him a satanist. After that, i decided that if I were to ever become an atheist, I would have to hide it from my family. My boyfriend, all of my friends, and some classmates from my college know about my lack of faith, but my family knows nothing. They are mislead to believe I am a strong Christian, and they can't tell the difference.
I attend a Catholic College, but i don't let that deter my lack of faith. And I really wish you didn't have to hide in the closet. it should be something to be proud of, that you are smarter than theists are. not something to be ashamed of and scoffed at for. There are thousands of atheists, and the Catholic Church is losing ever more followers!!
Be strong, fellow nonbeliever, and hopefully this will console you :)
