You'd think with all the crosses on hills and churches on every corner this would be the most law abiding and drug free state in the union. Reality, somehow doesn't quite match that though.
We hope you are planning to come to our celebration of freethinking on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Coonskin Park in Charleston, WV. The event will be jointly hosted by us, the Charleston Secular Humanist Community Center (Charleston SHCC), and the Morgantown Atheists. In continuation of the Morgantown Atheists’ annual tradition, the event is called A.S.H. Bash III. “A.S.H.” stands for “Atheists, Skeptics, and Humanists.” But everyone is welcome, unconditionally!
As you'll see on our schedule below, we will have food, games, music, a speaker, a moderated discussion, and other entertainment, beginning at noon and lasting till around six p.m., at which time we will head over to Plaza Maya (Mexican restaurant) in Kanawha City for the "A.S.H. Bash After Hours” hangout, which will be officially hosted by the Kanawha Valley Atheists and Agnostics.
Approximate schedule of the day’s events: (11:00am – 12:00pm: Setup)
12:00pm – 3:00pm: Lunch, picnic games, icebreaker games, kids’ arts and crafts, and an improv performance
3:00pm – 3:30pm: Speech from Jim Haught, author and Editor-in-Chief of the Charleston Gazette, on the subject “Religion Is Dying”
3:30pm – 4:30pm: Live music and open mic (so bring your musical instruments if you want!)
4:30pm – 600pm: Group discussion, facilitated by Alicia Allyn Bobcheck, on the topic “Issues Facing the Secular Community in Our Region”
6:00pm: Wrap-up, pack-up, and head over to the A.S.H. Bash After Hours event at Plaza Maya
You will be welcome to stay for as much or as little of the day’s events as you wish, of course!
What to bring Just yourself is plenty, but we hope you will also bring friends and family! Calm and friendly pets are also welcome.
In addition, we would appreciate it if you could bring a food item to share, as our lunch will be potluck-style. You may also want to bring a lawn chair, for more comfort than the picnic tables offer.
As mentioned above, you are welcome to bring your musical instrument/s for the open mic time. One of our members is bringing a digital piano and a guitar that you can use if desired.
But, again, it is fine to just come as you are!
How to get there For those who don't drive or don't want to, we will provide a free shuttle service to the park from the East End of Charleston. You can meet us at the parking lot of State Farm (Brett Kelly), beside McDonald’s—1614 Washington Street East. If you don't see us and you have a cell phone, call Jason Loveless at (850) 206-5873.
For those driving to the park, we will be at Shelter #1, which is across from the park entrance (but not very visible from the road). The parking lot for Shelter #1 is actually before the park gates, on the left side of the road. We will put up signs to help you!
Questions, Comments, or Volunteers? Please feel free to email us back or contact us via our website, Facebook page, Meetup group, or Twitter account. You can also call Anna Eplin, the SHCC Co-Chairperson, at (304) 205-4620. (Please leave a message if she doesn't answer.)
We hope you can come, and we look forward to a fantastic time at A.S.H. Bash III!
Sincerely, The Charleston Secular Humanist Community Center, Inc.
Thanks Jeffrey. I signed up, but the events are 3 hours away. :-\
Still it might be nice to check one out.
Hi Patrick, here's the link to the Mountain State Freethinkers' meetup group: http://www.meetup.com/Mountain-State-Freethinkers/
Thanks Gerald, as an aFaceBookist, I guess I'll have to work a bit harder to find people. ;)
I've checked out some of the Morgantown websites, but a lot of them seemed like they haven't been updated in a while, but I haven't signed up for MeetUp yet, I know I won't be able to see the calendars until I get around to that.
Patrick, most of the groups in the state use Facebook or Meetup to communicate. If you are in the Charleston area, look up the Kanawha Valley Atheists and Agnostics, in Morgantown we have the Morgantown Atheists, and the eastern panhandle has the Mountain State Freethinkers. They only have a Meetup group as far as I know. I'm sure any of those groups would be happy to have you.
How sad. :(
I've found so little activity among WV atheists...
We are meeting January 5, 2014 at 5pm for our regular monthly meeting.
Topic: Planning for the future. What do we want to talk about and what do we want to accomplish with Morgantown Atheists in 2014? Bring lots of ideas! Even if you haven't come to a meeting before, your ideas are welcome! So this would be a good meeting to be your first! :)
We are meeting at the Kenyan Cafe at 1137 Van Voorhis Rd. in Morgantown.
It was nice to meet some of you at the WV ASH Bash last month! If you wish to keep up to date join our Facebook group Morgantown Atheists, or the Meetup.com group under the same name, or check out the blog at www.morgantownatheists.com. We are meeting tomorrow Oct. 6 at 5:00 PM at the Kenyan Cafe in Morgantown at 1137 Van Voorhis Rd. The topic will be pagan beliefs that survived Christianity.
Hey Everyone! You are cordially invited to WV ASH Bash (Atheists, Skeptics, Humanists, et al) on September 7, 2013 at Dorsey Knob Park in Morgantown. We are having a big BBQ Picnic Potluck, with one speaker. The main focus is for all of us to meet in person and get to know each other. http://www.meetup.com/Morgantown-Atheists/events/123197552/
If you're interested you can email me at Neece@MorgantownAtheists.com :) We hope to see you all there! :)
