How do we find other free-thinkers in person?  I am getting good at this on the web.  I really need reinforcement when Jewish high holidays (in Oct.) and then Xmas rolls around.  Sucks to have started in a mixed marriage and have extra baggage!

Add one more to southern West Virginia :)  I think they are all hiding :)

@Jennifer: I'm surprised that the Eastern Panhandle is so void of atheists, being that it is included in the metro area.

I'm finding that there is a shortage here is Central WV, too, though not as few as I had originally believed. I've met a guy who works with 4 atheist co-workers. If only I could work in such an atheist-friendly environment.

I feel like I am one of the very few in the Eastern Panhandle, so worry that having the "club" out here would be silly.  Any atheists on this side of the mountains??    Jen

A message from Susi Bocks to all members of West Virginia Atheists on Atheist Nexus!

The NAP movement is growing, we have close to 3500 members. Not all states are represented with a state chapter. West Virginia is one of them! If you would be interested in taking charge of that position, please email me here on atheist nexus or susibocks@yahoo.com

Happy New Year to all fellow WV atheists and I hope you have enjoyed the solstice and Mythmas season. Please acquaint yourself with where in cyber-space you can find freethought activity originating in WV.

If you have not already done so, please consider joining the West
Virginia Atheist Yahoo Group, another fulcrum for freethought activities
statewide.  Once a member, post messages, check our "Links" function
for other websites of interest and post others that are topical. Feel
free to upload topical "Files" and "Photos".

For those who have a special interest in freethinking in the Morgantown vicinity, note the following websites.

The Univ. of Charleston is forming a campus Secular Student Assoc. See their facebook page.

Although not active recently, facebook members can participate at the WV Skeptics page.

Neece Campione of Morgantown has her own blog.

Joe Higginbotham is forming a chapter in the Charleston vicinity of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. If you are currently a member, otherwise interested, or seek guidance and advice for forming a chapter in your area of the state, message Joe at
Joseph Higginbotham

The November public appearance in Charleston of Ken Ham, CEO of the Petersburg, KY AIG Creationist Museum, has prompted an effort to protect and enhance quality science education at public facilities in West Virginia. If you would like to
participate or are otherwise interested, please message me.

Sam in WV

The latter two organizing efforts are not limited to atheists and agnostics, so please circulate the information to all whom you believe might be interested.

Join us for the Atheist Charleston Mythmas/solstice bash tomorrow night. Those intending to attend are welcome to arrive and depart at their leisure from 5:30 - 8:00 PM.

It is my unremitting pleasure to announce that the widely itinerant Atheist Evangelist of wide and controversial renown, Bro. Sam Singleton will be a guest.

See more about oratorical Brother Sam and his riotous attempts at godless evangelist at his website.

Videos of his handiwork can be seen here.

"Fundies'll shit their britches. But
godless folk'll laugh their asses off."
- Richard Carrier, Phd.

Our guest would appreciate any small donation in remittance of his professional appetite.

We will meet for leisurely dining at RIO GRANDE Mexican Restaurant
in downtown Charleston: 160 Court St.
All intending to be present are advised that street parking in the
vicinity is FREE starting at 6:00 PM. Charles Pique alerts us that the
parking lot at Lee and Court Sts. will allow patrons to park for FREE,
provided patrons' vehicles remain parked on the premise after 7:00 PM.

Agenda items will include:
the new WV chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State & of course, meeting and talking with Brother Sam.

Please join us and circulate this information among yourselves, even if you cannot attend. The agenda on behalf of the pseudo-science of "scientific creationism" should not be allowed to infiltrate our public education institutions.

We rally on behalf of QUALITY SCIENCE EDUCATION IN WV on Saturday, Nov. 6 in Charleston from 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM

We are responding to the "I Am Not Ashamed Conference" occurring simultaneously at the Charleston Municipal Auditorium.

Information about the conference:
Answers in Genesis Creation Museum of Petersburg, KY CEO, Ken Ham will be a featured headline speaker at the "I am Not Ashamed" conference open to the public on Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Charleston Municipal Auditorium, starting at 9:00 AM. Events should continue on into mid afternoon.

Also planned to make presentations is Dr. David Menton

Plan 1:
We meet at Clendenin St. in Charleston on the public sidewalk on the side of the Civic Center across from the entrance to the Town Center Mall. There is no verbal sloganeering. We conduct ourselves as a dignified peaceful vigil. WE
Feel free to make your own signs, although some signs should be available. We are seeking sources for concise handout literature.

Plan 2: (our backup)
In the event that one or more of 2 things occur, we proceed with plan 2, which is we meet for a social counter-rally 3 blocks away at Capitol Roasters at Summers & Quarrier Sts. Bring your books on biology and science, and we will compare notes.
Plan 2 becomes active if
a) if by Wednesday Nov. 3, at midday, we do not have high confidence for good attendance.
b) moderate to heavy rain will drown out our planned outdoor event as agreed on in plan 1.

If you would like to join us at Clendenin St., please notify Sam
@ sam_stetson@yahoo.com, or message me from my avatar at Atheist Nexux

I guess we aint got none in the Eastern Panhandle, though? I would dearly love that. Just had to tell my little boy "no" to boy scouts AGAIN and it would be nice for something as all those churchy things are most def. out.
