I'm not the one in charge of the billboard campaign here in Morgantown, but I'll try to find out how hard it is. I think that the FFRF just really needs one person to find the right billboard company, get prices of different billboards, and then be a "local" to ask for it. I'm sure they'd help with how to handle the media as well. Personally I like the American Humanists billboard better, but I don't think it's as easy to get them or get it sponsored like FFRF does.
I'll keep you posted if I get more info on it.

However, I like Richard's idea. I just don't want to be the one interviewed by the media. haha

Not wimpy at all, Sonja. My girlfriend isn't an atheist. She's not a theist, but more along the deist lines. She can't deny god at this point in her life, so we just ignore it for the time being. The more involved I become, the more agitated she gets. I wrote a letter to the editor in the Herald-Dispatch with a non-theist theme and received a pretty hardcore verbal backlash . Although I'm "out" as an atheist, publicly displaying my name again isn't something I want to do right now. I'm not really into "evangelizing". I just want to attract the non-theists who are out there, but in the closet. Giving everyone a place to be honest is a good start.

Here is the address for the yahoogroup WV Atheists. THey meet about once a month in Charleston. I live in Hurricane. I haven't been able to get to any of the meetings yet but would love to at some point. One of the stumbling blocks in my path is hubbie isn't atheistic and I'd feel kind of weird doing something without him like this. I know, I know - I'm wimpy.

A grass roots effort may work, but we're too scattered and fragmented IMO to make a big difference. Why come out as an atheist in a small town full of True Christians (TM)? But maybe it's just me, I tend to think too big sometimes :) But if the cost wasn't prohibitive, a banner on I64 between Charleston and Huntington wouldn't be a bad idea. At the very least, it would get you on the news where you could talk to a larger audience in a sound byte of some sorts.

I think that simply printing a one-pager and putting copies up around our respective towns would be great. We could advertise our group on this site or start a new one (that's quite a bit of work, though). This site is a great place to get everyone together and organize. Granted, we all probably can't drive to one meeting place and get together, but even if we organized town by town...

What's the general cost to run a billboard? I assume that the FFRF has a membership count requirement or something like that? I've never really looked into it, but lately I've been getting angrier with the ignorant fundies who can't seem to be quiet, so I thought it may be time to shout back.

Our Morgantown group is just getting off the ground too. I like the idea of maybe doing some kind of bulletin board thing. That's a great idea! We're looking into getting a billboard through FFRF or the AHA put up. I think that would help some people come out of the closet and see about joining.

We should build a tree house (joking). That doesn't sound bad at all, and I wonder about possibly a member drive to find all of those still in the closet. I mean hell, my neighbors keep leaving religious crap on my door, may as well leave some reasonable stuff on theirs. How many people in this group are in southern WV?

I would just like to have monthly meetings, maybe some ad campaigns (even if it was simple print jobs on bulletin boards...nothing major). I'd like to meet with some likeminded folks, trade ideas, see what everyone is reading, debate...anything really. Doesn't even have to be formal or official.
