Conversational Atheist blog

Charlie Hebdo

Even though I've been away from actively writing this blog/website for a while now, it's never left my heart (and the occasional technical glitch or new comments will send me here to diligently deal with any issues). I just wanted to post my support in the recent tragedy. As alluded in my previous blogpost, […]

Strategies for dealing with crazies

There have been a considerable amount of violent protests around the world in the past week or so. So, what to do? It is wise to think about whether your actions are rewarding or punishing actions. For example, if laws were successfully passed in Western countries that restricted free speech against the Quran or Mohammad […]

Atheist Response to Rabbi

The Huffington Post recently posted An Open Letter to the Atheist Community by Rabbi Adam Jacobs. The reason behind his letter is "so that we can understand each other better and possibly "walk back" some of the clamorous dialogue." Sounds reasonable enough -- let's see where this goes. I'll be quoting from his letter throughout […]

Can morality be scientific?

Image via Wikipedia There has been some back-and-forth in the comments of my blog, and I wanted to let the discussion out for a bit more air. Jason has been arguing that he thinks that Sam Harris fails to make the case for a scientific morality. I think my criticism is more damaging to Harris' […]

Homosex is immoral -- an atheist responds

Image via Wikipedia I recently walked through a large hostile crowd that had formed around a small group of Christians holding signs talking about the evils of homosexuality. The people surrounding the sign-bearers were largely upset about the signs -- probably a number of Christians, and definitely a number of atheists, as well. The interactions […]

Mike - To be honest I've never thought of looking for a Mormon chat room let alone spend time in one. I wonder how many people have filled out their contact form to have a missionary meet with them?

It's the Euthyphro dilemma. If everything God does and commands is good, and nothing commanded by God can be evil, then there is no morality, just the capricious whims of an arbitrary judge. If God only does and commands those things which are good, there is an objective morality separate from God, and as Mike K. said, God is irrelevant.

David - I'd like to start a discussion called "refuting the bible", and we can come up with other ideas.

Even if "God" (whatever that is) exists, the ethical question still remains: why is what God dictates morally correct?

Matt Dillahunty discussed this issue on the Atheist Experience Podcast awhile ago, but unfortunately I can't recall the details. He explains topics like this really well.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh.  I saw all of those links, but I somehow missed the label at the top of them.  It seems to be made up of links to the group creator's blog entries.

It's between the discussion forum and comment wall on this page.

Could some explain something to me? I was wondering the what the "Conversational Atheist Blog"  in this group is". Clicking on it leads me outside AtheistNexus. Is it basically a link M604 put in? Thanks.
