Writing to Congress

Many of us are angry and despairing at the political landscape, especially with the recent unprecedented threats to democracy itself in the United States.

Let's pool our brains and amplify our influence! Letters and phone calls to our elected officials make an impact, even if they don't always do what we ask, since they're ultimately concerned about "reelection, reelection, reelection".

Especially with help from our friends, it's not difficult to write letters calling for specific actions and telling powerful stories. We can share talking points, drafts, and letters we've sent, as well as problems we encounter and replies we get.

(The title refers to the U.S. system, but you're welcome to share how you're communicating with your elected officials in any country.)

If you read this group and haven't joined it, please consider joining! It'll encourage other AN members to be more politically active.

Letter to Rep House:

The United Nations issued an “early warning” to the US over its "alarming" racism, urging the Trump administration to “unequivocally and unconditionally” reject discrimination.

Trump is fueling a rising terror threat from White supremacists and Neo-Nazis through his appointments and speech. Trump’s Phoenix speech made it obvious that by “Make American Great Again” he means “Make America White Again.” Just days prior to Charlottesville, deputy assistant to the president Sebastian Gorka emphasized an exclusive focus on radical Islamic terrorism and heaped scorn on a New York Times reporter for mentioning the white supremacist threat. In part through the efforts of Gorka’s wife, also a Trump aide, the Department of Homeland Security’s Countering Violent Extremism program now focuses only on the radical Islamic threat, cutting programs aimed at deradicalizing neo-Nazis.

Some White Nationalists and Christian Nationalists are openly calling for civil war. What white supremacists planned in Charlottesville was more like a military invasion than a protest. They seemed more committed to inciting violence and raising the profile of their extremist movement than staging a peaceful rally. Trump led the way in condoning their terrifying actions and communicating to them that he is on their side.

One of President Donald Trump’s most trusted religious confidantes, Christian Nationalist pastor Paula White has defended Trump’s response to Charlottesville, and on national TV argued that resisting Trump equates resisting “the hand of God.” “… he …has been raised up by God.” “It is God who raises up a king.” “We must take back … our nation.” She claims that campaigns against Trump are the work of demons.

I call upon you to resist these attempts to divide our nation and promote civil war. Censure Trump for his response to the violent white supremacist march in Charlottesville.

I urge you to support H.Res.496, a resolution of censure condemning Trump's failure to adequately condemn the white domestic terrorism committed in Charlottesville and his hiring of white supremacist sympathizers.

I also urge you to support H. R. Res 53, which would remove the 1982 deadline to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Now is the time to establish strong legal protections in our Constitution against sex-based discrimination.

Nazi's are bad. We all hate Nazi's here. This hatred of Nazis is, in some cases though, threatening free expression. Check out the online civil rights activist group EFF ( Electronic Frontier Foundation )

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/08/fighting-neo-nazis-future-fre...

In the wake of Charlottesville, both GoDaddy and Google have refused to manage the domain registration for the Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi website that, in the words of the Southern Poverty Law Center, is “dedicated to spreading anti-Semitism, neo-Nazism, and white nationalism.” Subsequently Cloudflare, whose service was used to protect the site from denial-of-service attacks, has also dropped them as a customer, with a telling quote from Cloudflare’s CEO: “Literally, I woke up in a bad mood and decided someone shouldn’t be allowed on the Internet. No one should have that power.”

We agree. Even for free speech advocates, this situation is deeply fraught with emotional, logistical, and legal twists and turns. All fair-minded people must stand against the hateful violence and aggression that seems to be growing across our country. But we must also recognize that on the Internet, any tactic used now to silence neo-Nazis will soon be used against others, including people whose opinions we agree with. Those on the left face calls to characterize the Black Lives Matter movement as a hate group. In the Civil Rights Era cases that formed the basis of today’s protections of freedom of speech, the NAACP’s voice was the one attacked.

Protecting free speech is not something we do because we agree with all of the speech that gets protected. We do it because we believe that no one—not the government and not private commercial enterprises—should decide who gets to speak and who doesn’t.

I urge you to purge all White Nationalists from government -- Steve Bannon’s resignation was merely a token. I urge you to oppose the open carry of weapons nation-wide in public protest situations, including sticks and sharpened shields. All it takes is the courage to stand up to the gun lobby and the common sense to know that guns and public protests do not mix. No “states rights” should allow states to endanger their citizens or to legalize (or selectively enforce) brandishment in sensitive situations such as Charlottesville. I urge you to investigate the links between Neo-Nazi leaders and hostile foreign states such as Russia, including William Daniel Johnson, David Duke, Preston Wiginton, Richard Spencer, Jared Taylor, Kevin MacDonald, and Matthew Heimbach.

I urge you to support the bipartisan Authorization for Use of Military Force introduced by Senators Jeff Flake and Tim Kaine. It is time to end the overly broad and outdated 2001 authorization and reintroduce appropriate congressional oversight of the fight against terrorism.

I urge you to oppose the secret NAFTA negotiations, which will allow corporations to use industry-rigged trade tribunals take power over national governments and human citizens. You must protect environmental and climate safeguards by preventing global corporations from using secretive international investment tribunals to sue governments for millions or billions of dollars if environmental or other public interest regulations interfere with corporations’ expected future profits. NAFTA regulatory review process inherently gives disproportionate weight to quantitative data and economic costs, while diminishing the perceived importance of qualitative benefits such as saving lives and maintaining the global ecosystem.

By backing White Nationalists and ChristoFascists, the GOP is taking our nation into uncharted and dangerous territory. As author Thomas Frank points out in What’s The Matter With Kansas?, culture wars allow the Republicans’ other major base—predatory capitalists—to exploit the electorate and rise to power.

This goes beyond Putin’s use of US Neo-Nazis to destabilize our country. The strain of fascism threatening to overtake the US is far more virulent than that of Hitler’s Germany, because of the larger context in which it unfolds. We’re not just facing systemic moral corruption and genocidal-intent racism dividing the country, devouring our economy, and ultimately killing millions this time. Now global corporations are taking control of humanity, in a more absolute sense than the exploitation of human beings for slave labor in Axis factories. Corporations are becoming a privileged class of “citizens” approaching ultimate dominance through corporate “free speech”, dark money, data analytics such as Cambridge Analytica, the predictive techniques of Palantir, use of Justice System warrants to create a data base of all citizens who oppose the Trump Administration, and ownership of mass media.

Open fascist organizing, nuclear warmongering, celebrity antics, and threats to healthcare all distract the public from the magnitude of changes afoot and our Climate Change driven danger. Attacks on science, truth, and fact checking hide the self-limiting self-immolating corporate agenda’s larger context. The GOP-backed corporate/1%er coup elevates quarterly profit over species survival. Fossil fuel corporations fund this hard right shift to thwart our efforts to curtail them in the interests of forestalling climate destabilization and losing a habitable planet. This time we won’t just lose 6 million Jews plus 3% of world population in war casualties, with a chance to reconstruct a new society from the ashes. Fossil fuel dependence is degrading the fundamental environment upon which everyone depends. The current political struggle is an existential crisis. The GOP is shoving all future into a Climate Chaos meat grinder, which nature won’t reverse for 100,000 years.

Letter to Rep Senator:

I urge you to support the support The Private Prison Information Act (S. 1728), which would require prisons run for profit to be accountable to the public through FOIA on the same terms as public prisons.

I urge you to support a clean bill to lift spending caps, without any “poison pill” riders such as the spending cuts or other House Freedom Caucus concessions. Trump’s demands for border wall funding this time around, even if it means shutting down the government, are insane.

Since Sept. 11, more than twice as many Americans have been killed on U.S. soil by white supremacists than by all other foreign or domestic groups combined. In their joint intelligence bulletin, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI said white supremacist groups had carried out more violent attacks than any other domestic extremist group over the past 16 years, and were likely to commit more. Despite these warnings, the White House defunded a program aimed at countering white nationalist extremism. Life After Hate, the only anti-white nationalism group given funding under the Counter Violent Extremism (CVE) program, saw a 20-fold increase in calls for help from those reporting signs of radicalization in themselves or others. Life After Hate co-founder Christian Picciolini said. “We have hundreds of thousands of homegrown sovereign citizens and militia members with ties to white nationalism training in paramilitary camps across the U.S...” James Alex Fields’ apparent radicalization and subsequent violence is part of a larger pattern flagged by both the FBI and the DHS. I urge you to push to re-fund and expand Life After Hate.

Former Bush era ethics czar Richard Painter blames the Charlottesville Riot on rhetoric from far-right White House Staffers. Rep. Steve Cohen says President Donald Trump must be removed from office following his explosive comments defending participants in a white nationalist rally that turned deadly in Charlottesville. “President Trump has failed the presidential test of moral leadership.” I urge you to support his call for impeachment. In The Daily Stormer, Neo-Nazis celebrate Trump’s support. The Republicans in six states trying to pass laws to protect drivers who hit protesters must be condemned for encouraging domestic terrorism! The institutional bigotry of Republican voter suppression laws and gerrymandering also helped to fan these flames. I call on you to root out the institutionalized promotion of White Supremacy by members of our government, before it destroys our country as it destroyed the Confederacy and Hitler’s Germany.

Letter to Rep House:

A majority of U.S. House Democrats have signed on to John Conyers' bill, HR 676, proposing Medicare for All. The bill has 116 cosponsors. I urge you to join them.

I urge you to support a clean bill before the end of the month to lift spending caps, without any “poison pill” riders such as the spending cuts or other House Freedom Caucus concessions. Trump’s demands for border wall funding this time around, even if it means shutting down the government, are insane.

The Anne Frank Center published a list of alarming parallels between Trump and pre-Holocaust Germany:

  • The President creates his own media.
  • He exploits youth at a rally.
  • He endorses police brutality.
  • He demonizes people who believe, look, or love differently.
  • He believes Congress should change its rules to give him more power.

Letter to Dem senator:

Oregon has passed a law protecting workers from predatory scheduling by bosses. Employers with more than 500 workers will have to give workers a 10-hour break between shifts, or pay them extra, and give employees their schedules in writing at least a week ahead of time. If Democrats want to retake Congress on a good jobs agenda, this belongs right alongside minimum wage and paid leave. I urge you to introduce a similar federal law.

Letter to Rep House:

What kind of free country do we have when students and clergy have to depend upon Anarchists and anti-Fascists to save their lives from neo-Nazis? Cornell West said that in Charlottesville, the police just stood by. “The next day, for example, those 20 of us who were standing, many of them clergy, we would have been crushed like cockroaches if it were not for the anarchists and the antifascists who approached, over 300, 350 antifascists. We just had 20. And we’re singing "This Little light of Mine,"…The antifascists, and then, crucial, the anarchists, because they saved our lives, actually. We would have been completely crushed, and I’ll never forget that.”

I urge you to support the resolution introduced Tuesday by Rep. Pramila Jayapal which calls for the removal of administration employees who have supported or encouraged support for White Supremacists. I urge you to call for the removal of White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon, senior adviser Stephen Miller and national security aide Sebastian Gorka as targets of the resolution.

I urge you to push for the House Judiciary Committee, which oversees the Department of Justice’s handling of domestic terrorism, to hold hearings on the White Supremacy terrorism threatening our country. Push for immediate and separate action by The House Homeland Security Committee, which is downplaying the threat by lumping it into an annual “global threats” hearing scheduled sometime in September. Push GOP leaders to hold public sessions or launch inquiries, which they’ve been resisting. Statements of condemnation, by themselves, won’t stop a Fascist takeover in the US. Racist outlets like Breitbart must be ousted from the White House press corps!

Nancy Pelosi said, "There is only one side to be on when a white supremacist mob brutalizes and murders in America. The American people deserve a president who understands that." McCain said, "There's no moral equivalency between racists & Americans standing up to defy hate & bigotry.” Trump may rely on neo-Nazis to build and fortify his power, but you have more moral character, don’t you. Don’t you? Actions speak.
