Writing to Congress

Many of us are angry and despairing at the political landscape, especially with the recent unprecedented threats to democracy itself in the United States.

Let's pool our brains and amplify our influence! Letters and phone calls to our elected officials make an impact, even if they don't always do what we ask, since they're ultimately concerned about "reelection, reelection, reelection".

Especially with help from our friends, it's not difficult to write letters calling for specific actions and telling powerful stories. We can share talking points, drafts, and letters we've sent, as well as problems we encounter and replies we get.

(The title refers to the U.S. system, but you're welcome to share how you're communicating with your elected officials in any country.)

If you read this group and haven't joined it, please consider joining! It'll encourage other AN members to be more politically active.

Quick contact to senators:

Given that a fourth Kavanaugh accuser has come forward, I urge you to suspend the confirmation process on Brett Kavanaugh until an FBI investigation has been completed.

Letter to senators:

Secretary Pompeo overruled the advice of his own State Department experts and legal advisers in order to certify that the Saudi-led coalition was taking appropriate steps to protect civilians in Yemen, in order to protect US defense contractor profits. I urge you to initiate a Senate investigation of Pompeo’s lie. American-made bombs that have been used to slaughter Yemeni civilians since 2015. Bomb fragments were traced to Raytheon—which stands to profit massively from the Trump administration's recent arms deals with Saudi Arabia. Congress must stop our participation in the war in Yemen. FDR warned that war profiteers are an enemy of peace who consider the US government as a mere appendage to their own affairs. This administration acts as if it truly is a mere appendage of Raytheon.

Ruth, if you want to call them on using Predator drones at the US - Mexico border, perhaps you could also call them on the military strikes OUR MILITARY performed on Flint, Michigan!  This has been documented by Michael Moore (probably among others) in his film, Fahrenheit 11/9.

What I find especially disturbing is that the above-mentioned incident occurred during the Obama administration!

Sent to senators.

I urge you to sponsor a bill prohibiting use of military drones domestically!

I strongly object to the National Guard’s deploying MQ-9 Reaper drones along our southern border. National Guard Major General John F. Nichols and Major General Michael T. McGuire told a House committee that Reapers and Apache attack helicopters will be deployed.  Considering that a 2015 Homeland Security audit determined that ground-based sensors and radar towers were far more cost-effective for border monitoring than drones, there’s no justification for using drones capable of carrying 15 times the ordinance of Predator drones (such as four Hellfire missiles). Mowing down people on US soil at night with military drones has to be unconstitutional. It’s certainly a shockingly immoral plan. Nobody orders such weapons without planning to use them.

I'm continuing to call my senators almost every day about opposing "Above the Law" Kavanaugh -- who's now had criminal and judicial ethics complaints filed against him for lying to the Senate Judiciary Committee in connection with stolen emails, both in 2004 and 2006 and last week. (The judicial ethics complaint will be reviewed by... Merrick Garland!)

In "Write and Call and get friends involved" I mentioned a campaign where both Mainers and non-Mainers can pledge donations to Sen. Susan Collins' 2020 Democratic opponent, whoever that turns out to be, if she votes to confirm Kavanaugh.

Either Sen. Collins VOTES NO on Kavanaugh OR we fund her future opponent (Crowdpac)

Sent this email to my Republican senator. Much of it was copied.

I strongly urge you to oppose confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh for Supreme Court. The Republican Senate leadership's effort to ram through this confirmation with haste and secrecy is appalling. Trump has asserted that he has the unilateral right to pardon himself — it seems only reasonable that the judge he nominated to sit on the Supreme Court shares that view. It is mind-boggling, in one sense, that a federal judge doesn’t have a concrete answer as to whether the president can shred the Constitution in this way. “Can a president bribe someone?” is not a hard question. “Does our constitutional system permit the president to go on a crime spree and pardon himself?” shouldn’t be up for debate.
Latinx citizens residing near the southern border have been denied passports, prevented from re-entering the country without warning, detained in immigration camps and scheduled for deportation. Denial of citizenship to documented Latinxs who were born with midwife assistance in the US CAN NOT STAND! Stop this by sponsoring a bill. All citizens birthed by midwives, or by any other circumstance outside of a hospital, are threatened if you allow this outrage. Around 12% of US vaginal births are attended by certified midwives or nurse-midwives. In addition, about 7,000 babies/yr are born at home unattended by any medical professional. My mother birthed me at home with a midwife. This State Department is beginning to act like NAZI Germany did when it stripped Jews of citizenship.
The Trump administration’s aggressive interpretation of “fraud” in the Borgono case has raised the concern that it could denaturalize someone over any tiny omission or error in their application, no matter how innocent. It’s wrong to decouple the standards for denaturalization from those of naturalization. My concern is that this white supremacist administration will weaponize denaturalization for racist ends.

One of the progressive groups that emails me suggests that we spread the epithet Above the Law Kavanaugh. far and wide, every time we mention the Supreme Court nominee in email, on social media, etc. Seems like a fair summary of his position with respect to the president*.

In addition to opposing Kavanaugh, and supporting Sen. Warren's Accountable Capitalism Act, I'm also urging my senators to oppose Sen. Thom Tillis's sham healthcare "fix" (apparently S. 3388) with a name that would make snake-oil salesmen proud: "Ensuring Coverage for Patients with Pre-Existing Conditions Act". Insurers wouldn't be able to deny you a policy -- they just wouldn't have to actually cover your pre-existing condition! Also, premiums could vary, as they could before the Affordable Care Act, based on age, gender, occupation, or leisure activities. Small business premiums could vary based on the health of their employees.

"To be clear, this isn't about actually protecting anybody's healthcare. It’s about Republicans panicking over the fact that they've terrified voters with the lawsuit—backed by Trump's Justice Department—that would gut those protections. They're pretending like this bill would fix everything, should that challenge to the ACA prevail."

"Senate Republicans introduce sham bill to 'protect' pre-existing co..." (Joan McCarter, Daily Kos)

Yes, the Accountable Capitalism Act is S. 3348.

I just added a discussion at Politics, Economics, and Religion, "Accountable Capitalism Act: 'real citizenship for corporate persons'", quoting from and linking to Matthew Yglesias' article at Vox giving detailed background and commentary: "Elizabeth Warren has a plan to save capitalism: she’s unveiling a bill to make corporate governance great again."

My calls yesterday and today were to my senators, to cosponsor and support Sen. Elizabeth Warren's Accountable Capitalism Act that she introduced yesterday (see the article at The Hill, and Sen. Warren's summary). (This might be S. 3348.)

Corporations with more than $1 billion annual revenue would be required to obtain a federal charter, and to consider the interests of all stakeholders, including their employees, customers, and communities.

At least 40% of Board of Directors members must be selected by employees; directors and officers may not sell company shares within five years after receiving them (to encourage action for the company's long-term viability); these corporations must obtain 75% shareholder approval and 75% board approval for all political expenditures; and state attorneys general can petition for the charter to be revoked for repeated and egregious illegal conduct.

I also repeated my opposition to Brett Kavanaugh, and to any Trump judicial nominee.

...a man who cannot keep his own lies straight... The Putin summit and immigration atrocities indeed correlate with an increasing number of lies from Popular Vote Loser, now averaging 7.6 lies a day.

I've been calling my senators just about every day to oppose Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, or any Trump judicial nominee for that matter. Some points:

- Kavanaugh believes that a sitting president should basically be above the law, not tried or charged or even investigated. This while the very legitimacy of his election is in question.

- Accused criminals do not get to choose the judges who will review or suspend or dismiss their case.

- New: Kavanaugh believes a president can simply ignore laws that he asserts are unconstitutional, as in numerous signing statements from the Bush White House.

I've told my congressman that the House needs to pass the congressional resolution of disapproval already passed by the Senate to restore net neutrality.

I've told all three of my members of Congress to oppose the new proposal that would make it harder for legal immigrants to become permanent residents or U.S. citizens. "Trump's proposal would prevent legal immigrants from obtaining citizenship or green cards if they [or their household members have] ever used social programs like the Affordable Care Act, children's health insurance, or food stamps. The proposal is the brainchild of Stephen Miller and would not require congressional approval. If enacted, it would represent the biggest change to the U.S. legal immigration system in decades, and more than 20 million immigrants could be affected." (NBC News via What The Fuck Just Happened Today) The proposal would redefine "public charge" in the immigration regulations. It might not require congressional approval, but like other federal rulemaking, could be overruled by a congressional resolution of disapproval under the Congressional Review Act (just like the fight to restore net neutrality).
