Writing to Congress

Many of us are angry and despairing at the political landscape, especially with the recent unprecedented threats to democracy itself in the United States.

Let's pool our brains and amplify our influence! Letters and phone calls to our elected officials make an impact, even if they don't always do what we ask, since they're ultimately concerned about "reelection, reelection, reelection".

Especially with help from our friends, it's not difficult to write letters calling for specific actions and telling powerful stories. We can share talking points, drafts, and letters we've sent, as well as problems we encounter and replies we get.

(The title refers to the U.S. system, but you're welcome to share how you're communicating with your elected officials in any country.)

If you read this group and haven't joined it, please consider joining! It'll encourage other AN members to be more politically active.

My calls today to my senators (in addition to supporting the Hold the LYNE Act) were about Brett Kavanaugh, who won party-line approval this morning from the Senate Judiciary Committee, and awaits the full Senate voting on his confirmation to the Supreme Court.

My message was inspired by, and greatly expanded from, a PCCC / Bold Progressives script on the theme of "I believe her" (Christine Ford) and calling on Republican senators to say so as well.

"Hi, my name is ... and I’m a voter in ..., zip code ...

I’m calling about Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. Both he and we, the American people, deserve a fair consideration of his qualifications, history, and character.

Christine Ford’s testimony yesterday before the Judiciary Committee was extremely credible. I believe her.

Judge Kavanaugh was not. He refused to answer simple questions.

I believe Dr. Ford.

Even if Judge Kavanaugh weren’t implicated in multiple credible allegations of sexual assault, there are other reasons he is unfit for the bench. He lied under oath before the Judiciary Committee, both this month, and in 2004 and 2006 for his DC Circuit seat. He lied about respecting Roe v. Wade (which a majority of Americans, including Republicans, rightfully support) as “settled law”.

People are routinely evaluated for promotions without the high standard of proof of a criminal trial. Being denied a job promotion, and “merely” keeping his lifetime appointment on the nation’s second most important court, is hardly “ruining a man’s life”. Being subjected to violent attempted rape, as Dr. Ford was, does change a life forever. It's something I fortunately never experienced firsthand, and which nobody should have to experience firsthand.

Again, I believe Dr. Ford, and I’m asking Senator ... to publicly say that he believes her also, and to oppose Kavanaugh.

[or if the senator already opposes the nomination:] ... to continue to speak out against Kavanaugh’s nomination, and do everything possible to block a rushed vote before the full Senate.

Thank you for taking our calls.

Senate letter:

I urge you to oppose the Senate version of HR 6687, which enshrines private cattle ranching on Point Reyes National Seashore in California’s Marin County, the ONLY national park where tule elk exist. It requires the Interior Department to maintain dairies and ranches on public lands by giving 20-year leases for private cattle grazing. The bill  directs the Park Service to remove tule elk from these ranch lease areas or allow the elk to be shot, without any environmental assessment, sabotaging a public-planning process aimed at evaluating ranching impacts and resolving cattle conflicts with native wildlife. This sickening abuse of American wildlife makes me angry.

Based on new research, I sent this letter to all congress critters.

I urge you to support legislation that sets the social cost of carbon based on this latest science, and establish a revenue-neutral carbon tax.

The EPA only sets the global social cost of carbon (SCC) at $12 to $62 per metric ton of CO2 emitted by 2020. A new study from University of California at San Diego shows the SCC as $180 -- 800 per ton of carbon emissions.  They found the SCC for the US highest among almost 200 countries. COUNTRY-LEVEL SCC for the U.S. alone is estimated to be about $50 PER TON. This means that the nearly five billion metric tons of CO2 the U.S. emits each year is costing the U.S. economy about $250 billion.

Because impacts on people, businesses and ecosystems are not included in market prices, “consumers of fossil fuel energy do not pay for and are unaware of the true costs of their consumption .”

The RAND Corporation’s latest report warns, “There are long-term consequences of making policy without facts.” A previous era of truth decay contributed to the Great Depression.

Politicians of the 1930’s served on a securely stable planet. Your term occurs on a planet shifting  toward multiple tipping points, each of which will worsen our plight exponentially.  US policy MUST be based on TRUTH.

Letter to senators:

I urge you to cosponsor the Hold the LYNE Act, S.3448 introduced by Sen. Markey. This critical bill would block funding for so-called “low-yield” nuclear weapons. There’s no such thing as a “usable” or “safe” nuclear weapon. Each of Trump’s new bombs would be more devastating than the ones the United States dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Given that a fourth Kavanaugh accuser has come forward, I urge you to suspend the confirmation process on Brett Kavanaugh until an FBI investigation has been completed.

Letter to senators:

Secretary Pompeo overruled the advice of his own State Department experts and legal advisers in order to certify that the Saudi-led coalition was taking appropriate steps to protect civilians in Yemen, in order to protect US defense contractor profits. I urge you to initiate a Senate investigation of Pompeo’s lie. American-made bombs that have been used to slaughter Yemeni civilians since 2015. Bomb fragments were traced to Raytheon—which stands to profit massively from the Trump administration's recent arms deals with Saudi Arabia. Congress must stop our participation in the war in Yemen. FDR warned that war profiteers are an enemy of peace who consider the US government as a mere appendage to their own affairs. This administration acts as if it truly is a mere appendage of Raytheon.

Ruth, if you want to call them on using Predator drones at the US - Mexico border, perhaps you could also call them on the military strikes OUR MILITARY performed on Flint, Michigan!  This has been documented by Michael Moore (probably among others) in his film, Fahrenheit 11/9.

What I find especially disturbing is that the above-mentioned incident occurred during the Obama administration!

Comment by Ruth Anthony-Gardner on September 14, 2018 at 8:20pm

Sent to senators.

I urge you to sponsor a bill prohibiting use of military drones domestically!

I strongly object to the National Guard’s deploying MQ-9 Reaper drones along our southern border. National Guard Major General John F. Nichols and Major General Michael T. McGuire told a House committee that Reapers and Apache attack helicopters will be deployed.  Considering that a 2015 Homeland Security audit determined that ground-based sensors and radar towers were far more cost-effective for border monitoring than drones, there’s no justification for using drones capable of carrying 15 times the ordinance of Predator drones (such as four Hellfire missiles). Mowing down people on US soil at night with military drones has to be unconstitutional. It’s certainly a shockingly immoral plan. Nobody orders such weapons without planning to use them.

I'm continuing to call my senators almost every day about opposing "Above the Law" Kavanaugh -- who's now had criminal and judicial ethics complaints filed against him for lying to the Senate Judiciary Committee in connection with stolen emails, both in 2004 and 2006 and last week. (The judicial ethics complaint will be reviewed by... Merrick Garland!)

In "Write and Call and get friends involved" I mentioned a campaign where both Mainers and non-Mainers can pledge donations to Sen. Susan Collins' 2020 Democratic opponent, whoever that turns out to be, if she votes to confirm Kavanaugh.

Either Sen. Collins VOTES NO on Kavanaugh OR we fund her future opponent (Crowdpac)
