Writing to Congress

Many of us are angry and despairing at the political landscape, especially with the recent unprecedented threats to democracy itself in the United States.

Let's pool our brains and amplify our influence! Letters and phone calls to our elected officials make an impact, even if they don't always do what we ask, since they're ultimately concerned about "reelection, reelection, reelection".

Especially with help from our friends, it's not difficult to write letters calling for specific actions and telling powerful stories. We can share talking points, drafts, and letters we've sent, as well as problems we encounter and replies we get.

(The title refers to the U.S. system, but you're welcome to share how you're communicating with your elected officials in any country.)

If you read this group and haven't joined it, please consider joining! It'll encourage other AN members to be more politically active.

Letter to Republican senator:

I strongly urge you to support initiatives congruent with objectives of The Green New Deal. New research from the Potsdam Institute forecasts that business as usual will bring Catastrophic Climate Change, 2 degree rise, within 50 years. There's more CO2 in the air than ever before in 3 million years. Bill McKibben says, "The world is changing with ferocious, ferocious speed."

I am angry that you supported McConnell's "Nuclear Option" on approving judges and dozens of sub-Cabinet administrative posts with only two hours of debate. By rigging the system, Republicans are directly jeopardizing constituent civil and human rights,

To my representative:

I urge you to vote YES on HR 582, the Raise the Wage Act. The federal minimum wage hasn’t been increased in nearly a decade.

Letter to senators:

I urge you to oppose Stephen Moore for appointment to the Federal Reserve Board. Moore’s career as a hack “economic analyst” is a farce, as he consistently gets basic facts wrong.

I urge you to oppose David Bernhardt for Secretary of the Interior. David Bernhardt is uniquely unfit to be Secretary of Interior! Bernhardt’s lack of transparency in his dealings at the DOI and the way his past clients are reaping the rewards of the department’s loosening of regulatory actions and expansion of drilling options, are a public display of why he is unfit for the DOI’s top job.

When you took office as a Senator, you swore to support the Constitution of the United States, which speaks of promoting "the general Welfare", not sacrificing it for that of a few CEOs and shareholders.

Letter to Republican Senator Toomey,

Thank you for opposing Trump's attempt to usurp congressional budget powers with a spurious "national emergency" declaration to build his wall. He abused Presidential powers in the name of national security. Please continue to defend the role of congress to control our budget.

I urge you to oppose Trump's executive order through which, under the guise of protecting free speech, he's attacking the finances of all colleges and universities which want to prevent Nazi rallies and organizations on their campuses. Did we not sacrifice enough in World War II to keep Fascists from taking over our country? Trump uses his bully pulpit TO BULLY academic institutions! Use your legislative power to clarify this issue and protect our academic foundations of actual freedom.

Your alarmed constituent,

Sent to Rep House member:

I strongly urge you to oppose the House Resolution by Rep Jamie Raskin and Cedric Richmond.
The accusations of anti-Semitism leveled against Representative Ilhan Omar are wrong and hateful. Criticizing our government’s support for Israeli actions that break international law isn’t anti-Semitic. Speaking out against the role money in politics plays toward that support isn’t anti-Semitic.
Congress consistently ignores dozens of UN resolutions condemning Israeli abuses. When Israel snipers mow down children and obviously disabled adults we’re silent.
Of course we should condemn anti-Semitism, but this political action equating criticism of U.S. policy toward Israel with an attack on Jewish people is itself a perverse form of anti-Semitism. We should oppose villainizing critics of color or Muslim faith with false claims of anti-Semitism, which we’ve seen before with Angela Davis, Marc Lamont Hill, and Michelle Alexander. Look at what people actually say and do, to determine bias. The GOP tolerates bias at the highest levels. This is just a cover for harassment of a female black Muslim.

Response to Republican Senator Toomey.

In response to your letter about The Green New Deal.

Your claim that the Green New Deal is a “radical proposal [that] would be catastrophic for Pennsylvania and the nation” is alarmingly short-sighted and a grave error.

Of course the Green New Deal threatens the US fossil fuel “renaissance”. Your politics is destroying everything for short term profit by the ultra-wealthy. Do you WANT your family to live in a world of ever-worsening catastrophes in about a decade? Your politics is crafting a world soon without hope, with out of control positive feedbacks spiraling toward our existential death-blow from the Stratocumulus Tipping Point.

Thanks, Ruth! I just called my congressman's and Republican senator's offices with a similar message.

Letter to Republican Senator and Congressman:

I strongly urge you to support the Green New Deal, and take further extraordinary action to prevent further Climate Destabilization.

The International Energy Agency has already shown that maintaining our current fossil-fueled economic system virtually guarantees a 6℃ rise in the Earth’s temperature before 2050. Recently, climate physicists at the California Institute of Technology determined that when CO2 reaches 1,200 parts per million a  Stratocumulus Tipping Point will be breached. Earth’s temperature will then quickly soar an additional 8 ℃. We now know that humanity faces a hard limit.

If Republicans continue serving the fossil fuel industry instead of human beings, during our decade of control, everyone will die within a hundred years. If we fail to curtail human emissions soon, multiple natural positive feedbacks will spew carbon, and we'll be helpless to stop them.

As conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin says, the current Republican Party no longer stands for constitutional democracy but behaves like a cult. Naval War College Professor Tom Nichols also points out that the Republican Party has been taken over by extremists.

Your only moral choice is to represent your constituents, including the young people not yet of voting age. Thousands of teens are protesting climate inaction. In ten years public outrage over our existential crisis will dominate worldwide culture. Your choices today will be judged.

I called my senators, urging them to cosponsor and support Sen. Mark Warner's "Stop the STUPIDITY Act", S. 198 (yet another cute backronym: officially the "Stop the Shutdowns Transferring Unnecessary Pain and Inflicting Damage In The coming Years Act").

It would prevent future government shutdowns by providing that funding would continue at current levels if a budget isn't passed (except for Congress itself and the president). (press release / draft text / congress.gov / govtrack.us)

The bill was sent to the Senate Appropriations Committee, three of whose Republican members also voted Yea yesterday on the clean continuing resolution to temporarily reopen the government:

Lamar Alexander (R-TN) 202-224-4944
Susan Collins (R-ME) 202-224-2523
Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) 202-224-6665

(That resolution didn't get the 60 votes needed to move forward. That was before Trump's announced "deal" today.)

If you're an Alaska, Maine, or Tennessee resident, your calls to those senators are doubly important. If not, your own senators can't vote on bills that don't make it to the floor! Urge these three senators to make sure S. 198 is reported out of committee, in addition to calling or writing your own senators.
