Writing to Congress

Many of us are angry and despairing at the political landscape, especially with the recent unprecedented threats to democracy itself in the United States.

Let's pool our brains and amplify our influence! Letters and phone calls to our elected officials make an impact, even if they don't always do what we ask, since they're ultimately concerned about "reelection, reelection, reelection".

Especially with help from our friends, it's not difficult to write letters calling for specific actions and telling powerful stories. We can share talking points, drafts, and letters we've sent, as well as problems we encounter and replies we get.

(The title refers to the U.S. system, but you're welcome to share how you're communicating with your elected officials in any country.)

If you read this group and haven't joined it, please consider joining! It'll encourage other AN members to be more politically active.

Rest of letter to Democratic Senator (starts in previous comment):

Through coercion and war-making threats Trump is making an end-run around Congress, to incite another Mideast War. Trump-Bolton want to justify military strikes on the dozens of Iranian scientific and research facilities devoted to its nuclear program. Anything, even Iran’s legitimate military activities, could provide Bolton with an excuse to go to war. According to a New Yorker profile of Bolton, as far back as last November he seemed to advocate bombing a missile test site in Iran after the country test-fired a medium-range missile. All of this gives extremists, including independent actors, the ability to try to provoke a US-Iran war by assassinating a US military officer or firing rockets into an American compound—even if Tehran has nothing to do with it. No President has the right to sabotage this country into a hair-trigger first strike war by such despicable manipulations. By waging economic warfare and coercing Iran to give us an excuse for a first strike, we inhabit the “Great Satan” image. Citizen distraction from criminal investigations of a regime is no justification for a new war killing millions. Why doesn’t the Democratic Party denounce this moral outrage with the force it deserves?

Letter to Democratic Senator: (last paragraph in next comment)

Election Security

McConnell has refused to take up any of the election security bills offered by various members of both parties. He clearly has no interest in preventing Russian election sabotage from happening in 2020. The treasonous implications of a president or political party ignoring Pearl Harbor or 9/11 would have been instantly obvious.  Our 2016 election “cyber-Pearl Harbor” by contrast, inflicted grave damage invisibly and non-violently, enabling its perpetrator and chief beneficiary—Putin and Trump—to deny it happened. Why doesn’t the Democratic Party denounce this moral outrage with the force it deserves?

Overt Coup Signals

Monday, the President of the United States of America, armed with the stature and symbols of his office, accused his investigators of treason while his followers chanted “lock them up.” He proclaimed, “Maybe if we really like it a lot and if things keep going like they’re going, we’ll go and we’ll do what we have to do, and we’ll have a three [term presidency] and a four, and a five." The US President publicly stating HIS Attorney General will go after his political opponents and the FBI for treason, which carries the death penalty, sends up no warning flag for you? Announcing his intent to be President for Life! Is the Democratic Party waiting for an engraved invitation to a concentration camp? Because Trump accuses his political enemies of mounting a coup, does that mean you’ll let him carry out his own coup in broad daylight? Why doesn’t the Democratic Party denounce this moral outrage with the force it deserves?

Imperial War to Cover Up Corruption

Trump, John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, are obviously attempting to launch an illegal, unauthorized war with Iran. Senators Tom Udall and Dick Durbin warn that, just as President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, invaded Iraq using false charges that Baghdad had a secret stash of nuclear and chemical arms, the Trump White House has taken a series of provocative, unwarranted steps that have brought the United States and Iran to the brink of war. On April 22 Trump ended the sanction waivers that allowed countries such as India, Turkey, and China to import oil from Iran, “intended to bring Iran’s oil exports to zero”—in other words, strangling the country’s lifeline. May 3 the White House said the United States would no longer permit Iran to enrich uranium or to “transfer enriched uranium out of Iran in exchange for natural uranium.” Both activities, along with many other provisions in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), were explicitly tolerated under that UN accord. The US is bullying Iran to either shut down its limited and highly regulated uranium-enrichment program or to withdraw from the JCPOA.

State Department’s terrorist listing has never before designated an entire nation’s armed forces as an FTO. The Trump administration is painting Iran as a terrorist threat by adding the IRGC to the State Department’s foreign terrorist organization (FTO) list.

Thanks, Ruth!

Looking at the Zero-Emission Vehicles Act, it gives proportionate credit between 2030 and 2040 to "partial zero-emission vehicles" such as hybrids -- good for further discouraging pure internal-combustion cars!

Specific bill numbers we can cite to our congresscritters, and links:

Zero-Emission Vehicles Act of 2019:
H.R. 2764 at congress.gov / govtrack.us
S. 1487 at congress.gov / govtrack.us / text from Sen. Merkley's website (congress.gov / govtrack.us should have bill text within a day or two)

Driving America Forward Act:
H.R. 2256 at congress.gov / govtrack.us
S. 1094 at congress.gov / govtrack.us

(The Govtrack site lets you react to bills with emojis -- a crude, self-selected opinion poll, but still a way to influence others who check the same bills. We can use the bandwagon effect to our advantage!)

Letter to Representative:

We should double down on electrifying transportation and support an expansion of EV tax credits so we can stop pollution that is driving the climate crisis.

I urge you to cosponsor and support the Zero-Emission Vehicles Act, introduced by Congressman Mike Levin. It would require half of all sales of new passenger vehicles in 2030 be Zero Emission Vehicles, with the mandate ramping up 5 percent per year to 100 percent by 2040,  amend the Clean Air Act,  set a federal zero-emissions standard for vehicles and boost the sales of battery electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

I urge you to cosponsor and support the Driving America Forward Act, introduced by Congressman Dan Kildee, to expand the electric vehicle and hydrogen fuel cell tax credits. It allows purchasers of an additional 400,000 vehicles per manufacturer to be eligible for the tax credit.

I urge you to stop all direct and indirect fossil fuel subsidies. The oil industry receives over $26 billion in subsidies from American taxpayers and pays nothing for polluting the air we breathe or exacerbating the climate crisis. Pollution from fossil-fueled transportation is the largest single source of climate pollution in the United States. According to new research published in The Lancet Planetary Health, exhaust from cars is responsible for up to 4 million new cases of pediatric asthma each year.

Thanks; I called my representative, and will also reach out to my senators and state rep.

I also thanked my congressman for (like all Democrats and eight Republicans) voting for H.R. 5, the Equality Act, that expands the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include sex, explicitly including sexual orientation and gender identity.

The eight Republicans who bucked the hateful party line and voted in favor:

Susan Brooks (Ind.)

Mario Diaz-Balart (Fla.)

Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.)

Will Hurd (Texas)

John Katko(N.Y.)

Tom Reed (N.Y.)

Elise Stefanik (N.Y.)

Greg Walden (Ore.).

Letter to US Representative:

I strongly urge you to cosponsor and support the LIFT America Act. Adapting our infrastructure to cope with the climate crisis is essential.

Sent to all congresscritters:

I urge you to prevent the Trump Administration from drumming up an unjustified war with Iran. There is no intelligence justification for triggering a war. Defiance of congressional subpoenas, to obstruct investigation of presidential corruption, has precipitated a constitutional crisis. Congress must defy warmongering as a political expedient to cover up foreign influence and corruption!

I strongly urge you to support Trump impeachment in order to publicly air the putrefying stench rotting the heart of US government.

It’s time to counter the narrative of pseudo-investigations by Barr and the GOP to cower the FBI into submission. They abuse their investigative power for detestable partisan purposes, exactly as the GOP did to attack the Clintons, as admitted by , then-House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

To my STATE representative:

While it’s critical to transition to renewable energy, HB 1425 is pathetically inadequate. The provisions only make sense if the target date for 100% renewable energy were 2025, as Extinction Rebellion demands. Eight European countries have signed a plan to do be carbon neutral by 2025 “at the latest”. Harvard scientist James Anderson says we need a World War II-style transformation of industry—an acceleration of the effort to halt carbon pollution and remove it from the atmosphere— within 5 years! Eight of the next-generation climate models being developed to produce the United Nation's 2021 Climate assessment are predicting significantly higher climate sensitivity than past models, around 5 degrees C for CO2 doubling.

I urge you inform the 88 legislators who signed HB 1425 of the horrific scientific findings which show that their 2050 goal is a death sentence.  Use your legislative skills, shout at them if you must! This is a climate emergency!

Sent to my representative:

I urge you to cosponsor and support Off Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act (OFF Act), H.R. 3671, to will put the United States on a pathway to replace fossil fuels with 100 percent clean energy generation and use by 2035. It takes bold action that will help the hardest hit communities, create good jobs, and end fossil fuel extraction.
A Blue Ocean event could happen between 2019 and 2022, and positive feedbacks would make an ice-free Arctic ocean last months every Summer within a decade. New research shows that when this happened in the past, regions of Greenland experienced a temperature rise of 16 degrees C (29 degrees F) within a few decades. The young are rising up to demand climate action! Climate Chaos looms. We face rapid, irreversible climate destabilization, a switch to a hostile climate regime, not a gentle rise in temperature.
