Writing to Congress

Many of us are angry and despairing at the political landscape, especially with the recent unprecedented threats to democracy itself in the United States.

Let's pool our brains and amplify our influence! Letters and phone calls to our elected officials make an impact, even if they don't always do what we ask, since they're ultimately concerned about "reelection, reelection, reelection".

Especially with help from our friends, it's not difficult to write letters calling for specific actions and telling powerful stories. We can share talking points, drafts, and letters we've sent, as well as problems we encounter and replies we get.

(The title refers to the U.S. system, but you're welcome to share how you're communicating with your elected officials in any country.)

If you read this group and haven't joined it, please consider joining! It'll encourage other AN members to be more politically active.

Letter to Senators:

We should double down on electrifying transportation and support an expansion of EV tax credits so we can stop pollution that is driving the climate crisis.

I urge you to cosponsor and support the Zero-Emission Vehicles Act, introduced by Senator Jeff Merkley. It would require half of all sales of new passenger vehicles in 2030 be Zero Emission Vehicles, with the mandate ramping up 5 percent per year to 100 percent by 2040,  amend the Clean Air Act,  set a federal zero-emissions standard for vehicles and boost the sales of battery electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

I urge you to cosponsor and support the Driving America Forward Act, to expand the electric vehicle and hydrogen fuel cell tax credits. It allows purchasers of an additional 400,000 vehicles per manufacturer to be eligible for the tax credit.

I urge you to stop all direct and indirect fossil fuel subsidies. The oil industry receives over $26 billion in subsidies from American taxpayers and pays nothing for polluting the air we breathe or exacerbating the climate crisis. Pollution from fossil-fueled transportation is the largest single source of climate pollution in the United States. According to new research published in The Lancet Planetary Health, exhaust from cars is responsible for up to 4 million new cases of pediatric asthma each year.

Thanks; I called my representative, and will also reach out to my senators and state rep.

I also thanked my congressman for (like all Democrats and eight Republicans) voting for H.R. 5, the Equality Act, that expands the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include sex, explicitly including sexual orientation and gender identity.

The eight Republicans who bucked the hateful party line and voted in favor:

Susan Brooks (Ind.)

Mario Diaz-Balart (Fla.)

Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.)

Will Hurd (Texas)

John Katko(N.Y.)

Tom Reed (N.Y.)

Elise Stefanik (N.Y.)

Greg Walden (Ore.).

Letter to US Representative:

I strongly urge you to cosponsor and support the LIFT America Act. Adapting our infrastructure to cope with the climate crisis is essential.

Sent to all congresscritters:

I urge you to prevent the Trump Administration from drumming up an unjustified war with Iran. There is no intelligence justification for triggering a war. Defiance of congressional subpoenas, to obstruct investigation of presidential corruption, has precipitated a constitutional crisis. Congress must defy warmongering as a political expedient to cover up foreign influence and corruption!

I strongly urge you to support Trump impeachment in order to publicly air the putrefying stench rotting the heart of US government.

It’s time to counter the narrative of pseudo-investigations by Barr and the GOP to cower the FBI into submission. They abuse their investigative power for detestable partisan purposes, exactly as the GOP did to attack the Clintons, as admitted by , then-House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

To my STATE representative:

While it’s critical to transition to renewable energy, HB 1425 is pathetically inadequate. The provisions only make sense if the target date for 100% renewable energy were 2025, as Extinction Rebellion demands. Eight European countries have signed a plan to do be carbon neutral by 2025 “at the latest”. Harvard scientist James Anderson says we need a World War II-style transformation of industry—an acceleration of the effort to halt carbon pollution and remove it from the atmosphere— within 5 years! Eight of the next-generation climate models being developed to produce the United Nation's 2021 Climate assessment are predicting significantly higher climate sensitivity than past models, around 5 degrees C for CO2 doubling.

I urge you inform the 88 legislators who signed HB 1425 of the horrific scientific findings which show that their 2050 goal is a death sentence.  Use your legislative skills, shout at them if you must! This is a climate emergency!

Sent to my representative:

I urge you to cosponsor and support Off Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act (OFF Act), H.R. 3671, to will put the United States on a pathway to replace fossil fuels with 100 percent clean energy generation and use by 2035. It takes bold action that will help the hardest hit communities, create good jobs, and end fossil fuel extraction.
A Blue Ocean event could happen between 2019 and 2022, and positive feedbacks would make an ice-free Arctic ocean last months every Summer within a decade. New research shows that when this happened in the past, regions of Greenland experienced a temperature rise of 16 degrees C (29 degrees F) within a few decades. The young are rising up to demand climate action! Climate Chaos looms. We face rapid, irreversible climate destabilization, a switch to a hostile climate regime, not a gentle rise in temperature.

Sent to Senators:

I urge you to object to Secretary of the Treasury Mnuchin hiring Monica Crowley as Treasury’s Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs. Is it even legal to hire someone who registered as a foreign agent for Ukrainian oligarch Victor Pinchuk in 2017? A CNN report charged her with plagiarizing thousands of words of her 2000 dissertation for her Columbia University Ph.D., and found “more than 50 instances of plagiarism” in her 2012 book.

Sent to my PA state representative:

I urge you to introduce legislation in Pennsylvania similar to Colorado’s HOUSE BILL 19-1188, CONCERNING THE INCLUSION OF THE NET IMPACT ON GREENHOUSE  GAS POLLUTION IN THE FISCAL NOTES PREPARED FOR LEGISLATIVE MEASURES.  This requires that bills be scored not just for budget deficit impacts but also for their ne greenhouse gas emissions.

Beginning in 2020, the bill requires fiscal notes on legislative measures to include an assessment of whether the measure is likely to directly cause a net increase or decrease in greenhouse gas pollution in the 10-year period following its enactment. The assessment must consider new sources of emissions, increases or decreases in existing sources of emissions, and any impact on sequestration of emissions. The fiscal note is not required to estimate the magnitude of the impact. The director of research of the legislative council staff is required to develop policies and procedures for completing the assessment. The department of natural resources, the Colorado energy office, and other state agencies with relevant subject matter expertise are required to cooperate with and provide information, if requested, to develop the policies and procedures for the assessment and to provide information to the legislative council staff on a legislative measure's impact on greenhouse gas pollution in connection with the preparation of a fiscal note.

Letter to senators about Trump tax returns:

Trump declared that he is above the law by directing the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service to keep his federal income tax returns of the last six and related “tax information” from House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal. A 1924 anti-corruption law requires every federal employee who touches the tax system to do their duty or be removed from office.

Please urge the Senate to demand the arrest and removal from office for trial of Treasury Steve Mnuchin, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, and IRS commissioner Charles Rettig.

Following a provision in our tax code, Section 7214(a), these men “shall be dismissed from office or discharged from employment and, upon conviction thereof, shall be fined not more than $10,000, or imprisoned not more than 5 years or both.”  The law covers official inaction, too. Anyone who “omits” his duty “shall” be removed and may be prosecuted as a felon.

Trump is also a federal employee. There’s no statute of limitation on criminal tax fraud. If, like Nixon, Trump is found to have defrauded the US government, he can later rely on Pence to pardon him as Ford did Nixon.

Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney announcing on national TV that the Trump administration will “never” comply with the law acted as a shameless shout-out that the Republican Party is party of lawlessness for those in power. Trump no longer even pretends that his sons keep his business separate from politics. The GOP embraces and defends institutionalized corruption by Trump.

Letter to senators with 5 requests:

I urge you to oppose the Enhancing Fossil Fuel Energy Carbon Technology (EFFECT) Act. While pretending to be a fix of the climate crisis, it’s a misdirection trick. Instead of directly addressing carbon emissions, it commits to further fossil fuel use. If carbon capture technology is to be improved, let that be included in a bill that also removes current fossil fuel subsidies and heavily taxes coal, oil and gas production.

I urge you to support the new bill by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse targeting so-called “dark money”. I also urge you to support a similar proposal, passed by the House in March as part of an elections and ethics overhaul, which has been stalled by Mitch McConnell.

I urge you to oppose Republican Kris Kobach - birther, anti-immigrant zealot and master of voter suppression – for permanent Homeland Security secretary. In Kansas he championed one of the worst voter suppressions laws ever, which was later struck down as unconstitutional.

I urge you to support the Equality Act S. 788, introduced by Senator Jeff Merkley. Taxpayer dollars should never be used to fund discrimination. The Equality Actalso clarifies that sexual orientation and gender identity are included in civil rights protections against sex-based discrimination which is important in in foster care and adoption services.

I urge you to support the Scientific Integrity Act S. 775, introduced by Senator Brian Schatz, to protect scientists and their work from political corruption. The way science is conducted, reviewed, communicated to the public, and incorporated into policymaking must be transparent and free from improper influence. I’m especially angered by anti-science conduct in the Dept. of Interior.
