I also thought of saying "and don't say a million seconds", but then I would probably get "A billion milliseconds.".

You're forgetting the number of geeks out there who don't follow the commonly understood rules, when they're not explicit, and who bend the hell out of the rules, when they are explicit.  ^.^

I first guessed a year.

... expressed in the common timekeeping unit for which the next greater unit would put your answer below 1.

My real guess was still pretty damned good.  I was thinking a little over a month.  What was your first guess?

Comment by Idaho Spud on January 27, 2014 at 3:51pm

Yes, I thought of specifying, but didn't want to give a clue.  I thought of saying "in hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries, but I would have to go on & on in order not do give a clue.

I finally decided not to specify because I knew what was meant when I heard it asked and figured most people would.

I was pretty much dead on for my initial guess.  About 1 millions seconds.  Gotta specify your units, man.

Comment by Idaho Spud on January 27, 2014 at 3:01pm

Quick!  How long is 1 million seconds?  Take a guess before you do the math, then do some math in your head, then with a calculator.

I was way off in my quick guess.  I was very close doing math in my head for one minute.
