The ducks have a new yard, my future tomato and bean garden. 12.22.17
I spotted these seed potatoes at WinCo today and decided to try growing some this year. I should have opened the package and checked them out, because when I got home, I saw that they had 3 inch sprouts. I would have checked several boxes and chose the one with the shortest sprouts. Well, they will probably do OK anyway.
Daniel, Farmland is about 80 miles from me, due East. A little too far to drive, taking 2 hours one way. But thanks for the "heads up"!
This afternoon, I'm off to find fruit and nut trees for my "hole" I've filled up (with over 50 wheelbarrow loads of soil). I'm thinking four will do it. Still haven't decided what I'll get. I'll know when I see them. Rural King, Lowe's, and a local greenhouse carries fruit trees.
Joan, I didn't mean to sound so skeptical and close-minded about lunar phases determining planting dates. With a science based mind (reason and logic), such lunacy (pun intended) is too farfetched for me, sort of like astrology. I have a college educated farmer friend who swears by planting according to the moon. It's a lot like praying: when it works, prayers are answered; if not, well, God works in mysterious ways (etc.).
Daniel, a beautiful painting. I am curious about the taste and texture of this variety and look forward to your reports as it matures for you. That news of having the "best vegetable garden ever" and good development of your trees raises my spirits and I will know it raises yours, too.
With all the news, the soil in the greenhouse encourages me to keep doing what I am doing and laugh a lot. Love as if it is the last day of my life, encourage others to reach for their dreams. Don't hold back, go full throttle. "Follow your bliss." (Thanks for reminding us, Joseph Campbell.)
Find a place inside where there's joy, and the joy will burn out the pain. Joseph Campbell

Randy, I can find no valid research on moon planting but lots of anecdotal papers. I don't trust the papers if the people who wrote them have no data to demonstrate the moon phase affects seed starting. There is a lot of unreliable information out there.
It would be an easy thing to study. Just plant some seeds according to the lunar calendar and plant seeds from the same packet on times that the lunar calendar says not to plant. Keep track of the time it takes to sprout and record it.
I'm not interested enough to do the technical task. Maybe someone else is. I just don't believe planting according to moon phases is valid.
HOW one plants seeds is valid and reliable, the test of good science.
Randy, good point about losing faith in the article because of lunar cycles! I ignored that thinking it was irrelevant.Maybe it is relevant. I wonder what the research says? It seemed to me the article fit my understanding of starting seeds.
Daniel, what is your assessment of the planting guide? Or anyone who is interested.
My favorite garden store in Spokane has a section on lunar cycles. I just don't pay attention to it.
Thanks for calling this to my attention.
Daniel, how do you plant sprouted potatoes? I would guess very carefully, because in my experience the sprouts break-off easily.
Wikipedia seems to confirm that depression may be reduced by that soil bacteria. Sounds good.
I have always wondered why I loved playing in the dirt....thanks for the article....

It surely felt good to be in the greenhouse again. The soil is still too cold to plant seeds, but I did clean up the beds and prepared for planting. The soil is nicely moist.
There is a problem of mold that I will tackle in the next day or two. We are having an icy-cold rain storm now that beats against the roof the house. I'm staying inside with Dominic.
