Robert Green Ingersoll, Illinois's Most Honored Freethinker:

"We have heard talk enough. We have listened to all the drowsy, idealess, vapid sermons that we wish to hear. We have read your Bible and the works of your best minds. We have heard your prayers, your solemn groans and your reverential amens. All these amount to less than nothing. We want one fact. We beg at the doors of your churches for just one little fact. We pass our hats along your pews and under your pulpits and implore you for just one fact. We know all about your mouldy wonders and your stale miracles. We want a this year's fact. We ask only one. Give us one fact for charity. Your miracles are too ancient. The witnesses have been dead for nearly two thousand years." -- Robert Green Ingersoll, "The Gods" (1872)

I have added a post to solicit mottos for a [hopeful] secular specialty Illinois license plate. Please take a moment to submit ideas for mottos at

Also vote in the test poll there.

I believe in time,
matter, and energy,
which make up the whole of the world.

I believe in reason, evidence and the human mind,
the only tools we have;
they are the product of natural forces
in a majestic but impersonal universe,
grander and richer than we can imagine,
a source of endless opportunities for discovery.

I believe in the power of doubt;
I do not seek out reassurances,
but embrace the question,
and strive to challenge my own beliefs.

I accept human mortality.

We have but one life,
brief and full of struggle,
leavened with love and community,
learning and exploration,
beauty and the creation of
new life, new art, and new ideas.

I rejoice in this life that I have,
and in the grandeur of a world that preceded me,
and an earth that will abide without me.
- P.Z. Myers

I saw this today, and it makes me happy to read, so i thought id share.

Happy to find a group for Illinois. I sort of assumed I would but I had to join it.

For anyone interested in central IL face to face meetings.

Conversations range all over and there is an interesting variety of people.
