I love the Mamas and the Papas too. As a wannabe lyricist myself, I find John Phillips was one of the very best, not to mention his skills as a vocal arranger. You can also hear his sure touch in the Beach Boys swan-song hit Kokomo, which he co-wrote. Among my favorites are three lesser-known songs which served as album fillers: 'Dancing bear', 'Once was a time I thought', and 'Safe in my garden'. Anyone know those? Unfortunately, Phillips got caught up in the dark side of the excesses of the rich and famous. He was a chronic hard-drug user and there were also nasty rumors of incest with his drug-addicted daughter. I don't claim to know the truth but no doubt it helps to account for his lack of productivity in later years.

Thanks Loren.  Great video.  The Mamas and the Papas were a great group.  I remember watching a documentary about them on PBS years ago.....they pretty much spent the span of their years together high on pot or some kind of drug.  Kinda like Louie Armstrong, who was a daily pot smoker.  They all made fantastic music!!

Yes, James, when Cass Elliot started her solo career she wanted to known as Cass instead of Mama Cass.  She even sang a song about it.

Thanks Loren.  I Call Your Name is my favorite Mamas & Papas, and Cass is the best part of it.

Hello Steph.  Good day so far. Hope yours is too

Loren - Thanks a bunch.  Another good one.

I just read that Cass Eliot hated to be called 'Mama Cass.' Anyone know if that's true?

lol, I thought you were just asking nicely for love and happiness.  PLEASE!  That works too.

Okay, so long as we're talkin' about Mamas and Papas and especially Cass Elliott, let's pull THIS out:

Personally, I think the Beatles would have approved.

Yeah, that new world sounds pretty nice, doesn't it?  Even though I was just a young kid in the 60's/70's, the pervasive influence of the Hippie culture definitely had an impact on forming my adult disposition.  Please, Love and Happiness, Baby!

So true. Well please educating me!

PS - I wish that 'new world' would come already.
