Politics, Economics, and Religion

Religion has so many connections to political and economic beliefs, there needs to be a place to identify linkages, problems, goals, options, action plans and evaluation criteria.

What is the purpose of life?

An eternal question, what is the purpose of life?, occupied philosophers’ thoughts throughout history. Stone pictographs reveal even primitive peoples reflected on this query. Each one has the capacity to define his or her personal thinking about politics, economics and religion.

Will the next generation rewin only lost freedoms or will they win some new freedoms?

A friend recently wrote me a thought-provoking discussion: ”Decades ago I read that each generation has to win its freedoms. May I, without being charged with donning rose-tinted glasses, ask if America’s next generation will rewin only lost…Continue

Suckers for Civility (Steve Shives)

Anyone here remember that funky old movie with Patrick Swayze, "Road House?" Swayze plays the cooler at a gin joint whose clientele are barely civilized, and he's tasked with bringing the place under control.  There's that one scene where he's…Continue

Mindbinding

Comment by Joan Denoo on October 19, 2012 at 2:48pm

Children learn how to hate, and there are a lot of targets for hate being taught. Family, religion, attitudes, beliefs, customs, traditions and values bind the minds of innocents and maintain and perpetuate dysfunction.

Mindbinding through indoctrination.

Comment by Joan Denoo on October 19, 2012 at 2:38pm

Mindbinding occurs when family, religion, education, health care, laws, attitudes, beliefs, customs, traditions and values operate to impose thoughts contrary to human flourishing.

My mother was a stylish young woman during WWII and even wore high heels doing housework. In her later years her two small toes had to be amputated because of her damaged bone structures. She had a terrible time with maintaining her balance, she fell frequently and had excruciating back pains.

Can you even imagine the pain of having to walk and work in fields, as these women had to do?

Comment by Joan Denoo on October 19, 2012 at 2:25pm

We can see the bound foot, we cannot see the bound mind, except in attitudes, beliefs, customs, traditions and values.

Comment by Joan Denoo on October 19, 2012 at 2:24pm

When a mind is bound by family, religion, education, attitudes, beliefs, customs, traditions and values, the individual does not understand this is a societal problem, not only a personal one. The personal is political.

Footbinding and mindbinding are not natural conditions for women, but the result of training by family, religion, culture, attitudes, beliefs, customs, traditions and values.

Jim Morin: Mannish GOP

I wonder if Mannish GOP realize how silly they sound; it would be funny if it were not so terribly sad.

Susan Jacoby - The Dumbing Down Of America

I hear statements from politicians and citizens that make my hair stand up on the back of my neck. It reminds me of the 2008 book by Susan Jacoby, "Dumbing Down America". Many people just don't see the evidence that is all around us. The time to get off fossil fuels is now; we may be past the tipping point already.

"I will fight for oil, coal, and natural gas."

“Drill, baby, drill”.

“Mr. Oil, Mr. Gas, and Mr. Coal”,

"Global warming is not true."
