Quotation Of The Day

A place to post quotations that inspired you, made your day better, or made you pause and think.

I will be taking a reduced role at Atheist Nexus as of Oct 1, 2017.  I will not be moderating this group after that time, and I will be re-zeroing most of my groups and comments.

If there are quotations that you wish to save, I recommend that you save them now.

Since this is a popular group, I recommend that a member start up a new group for quotations, so that the members can continue adding and reading their favorite quotes.

Thanks and happy reading!

The following is a real biggie for me:

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe.  If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened.  But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.
-- Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

Religion is fundamentally opposed to everything I hold in veneration -- courage, clear thinking, honesty, fairness, and, above all, love of the truth.
--H. L. Mencken

Daniel, that one is distinctly reminiscent of one by Goethe:

There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.

--Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I may  have posted this already, but this is MLK day and has special resonance in the post-post-modern political environment.

Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. - Martin Luther King, Jr.

I like the Yoko quote.

Stranger in a Strange Land put it one way:

If you've got the truth, you can demonstrate it. Talking doesn't prove it. Show people.
-- Robert A. Heinlein

But our guy may have been a bit more succinct:

If you can't show it, you don't know it.
-- Aron Ra

“Spring passes and one remembers one's innocence. Summer passes and one remembers one's exuberance. Autumn passes and one remembers one's reverence. Winter passes and one remembers one's perseverance.”
Yoko Ono

I picked up the following quotes from a Thinking Atheist podcast some years ago:

The supreme task is to organize and unite people so that their anger becomes a transforming force.
-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I have learned through bitter experience the one supreme lesson: to conserve my anger.  And as heat conserved is transmitted into energy, even so our anger controlled can be transformed into a power that can move the world.
-- Mohandas Gandhi

The problem is that congresscritters are very often insulated by their wealth and status from the immediate effects of great wrongs. Take their government healthcare plans, as they voted to dismantle ACA (which was just fine as Romneycare, but not as Obamacare!).

Joan, your Eleanor Roosevelt quote should be emblazoned on the walls of both houses of Congress ... and probably in the Oval Office as well.  The only problem would be that I wonder if some of those chimps know how to read!
