I will be taking a reduced role at Atheist Nexus as of Oct 1, 2017.  I will not be moderating this group after that time, and I will be re-zeroing most of my groups and comments.

If there are quotations that you wish to save, I recommend that you save them now.

Since this is a popular group, I recommend that a member start up a new group for quotations, so that the members can continue adding and reading their favorite quotes.

Thanks and happy reading!

Comment by Gary S on Saturday

Religion is an illusion and it derives its strength from its readiness to fit in with out natural wishful impulses.

- Sigmund Freud

Comment by Loren Miller on Friday

All men are born with a nose and ten fingers, but no one was born with a knowledge of God.
― Voltaire

Which pairs nicely with:

We are all born atheists until someone starts telling us lies.
-- Anon.

A classic from Thomas Paine...

Comment by Loren Miller on Thursday

Christians talk as though goodness was their idea but good behavior doesn't have any religious origin. Our prisons are filled with the devout.
― Andy Rooney

And some of those "devout" wear priest's collars!

Comment by Ruth Anthony-Gardner on Wednesday

“The actual foundation of racism is not ignorance and hate, but self-interest.” Ibram Kendi

Loren, it's my experience that we interpret subjective feelings as divine presence if we have been taught to do so. Then it's easy to convince yourself that you've "felt" the goddess or whatever.

I tried to convince myself once, when I was a teenager, that I felt God. Alone in the sanctuary, accompanying my mom on an evening errand to the church. I stared at the ceiling and drew deep breath as quickly as I could. I told our youth minister in his ball cap that I had felt Him. That I was blessed.

But in the end, it was only the wind and the rain, making noise in the darkness.

― Darin Bradley

And I know exactly what Darin is talking about here, because through my confirmation class, I was doing the same thing and came up with exactly bupkis. The odd thing is that, because I wasn't heavily indoctrinated, I was more indifferent about the whole business than insulted at non-existent ham-handedness. As a result, my break with religion was far longer and more circuitous.

Thanks for the Bab 5 quote and video. I loved that show, in particular the cross-species love and camaraderie. The time travel plot twists too.

A great scene; it does echo Krauss and Sagan. Thanks, Loren.

Okay, Joan ... by way of quotes and a bit of B5, here are Bruce Boxleitner and Mira Furlan as Captain John Sheridan and Delenn of the Mimbari in a brief but telling scene, one which echos words we've heard from the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Carl Sagan:

Well, here is further evidence I miss some good things by not watching TV.

Thanks to you, Loren, I have been able to find and watch some excellent music, books & TV.
