I will be taking a reduced role at Atheist Nexus as of Oct 1, 2017.  I will not be moderating this group after that time, and I will be re-zeroing most of my groups and comments.

If there are quotations that you wish to save, I recommend that you save them now.

Since this is a popular group, I recommend that a member start up a new group for quotations, so that the members can continue adding and reading their favorite quotes.

Thanks and happy reading!

Laugh at the foolishness of violence, ridicule, mock, satirize, lampoon, and taunt fascists.
--Joan Denoo

That's a good option that can change hearts and minds, both of onlookers and, hopefully, of some group members themselves!

There's lots of discussion and examples at "Ridicule Fascism", starting with the town of Wunsiedel, Germany turning a pilgrimage and march by neo-Nazis into a fun, festive "involuntary walkathon": every meter they marched resulted in additional donations to a group helping people leave right-wing extremist groups.

Ruth noted that "the marchers didn't look excited or happy. So it must be working." They were undoubtedly upset at having been reframed!

Bertold, you did it again!

Tell a man that the sun is 93 million miles away, and he'll believe you.  Tell him that the paint is wet, and he'll touch it, just to be sure!
-- Anon.

Tell a devout Christian that his wife is cheating on him or that frozen yogurt can make a man invisible, and he is likely to require as much evidence as anyone else, and to be persuaded only to the extent that you give it. Tell him that the book he keeps by his bed was written by an invisible deity who will punish him with fire for eternity if he fails to accept its every incredible claim about the universe, and he seems to require no evidence whatsoever.

--Sam Harris

Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.
-- Abraham Lincoln

Lots of good quotes here.  Alan, I especially love that Sam Harris quote.

Chris, your experience just pulled another rather related quote out of me:

We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.
-- Benjamin Franklin

And while I think about it ... any old time, Chris, any old time at all...

I needed that one, Loren, thanks. I talked to someone here who didn't want discrimination against Jews - she is one herself - but she had no trouble at all to discriminate against every other group... I was so angry I broke the contact.

Defend the right of all or surrender your own first. If you think your freedom includes the “right” to force me to surrender mine, reread the first sentence.
-- Brian Foulkrod

I found this quote on the do-it-yourself billboard section of FFRF's website.  From where I sit, this is a lesson that needs to be learned by EVERY MEMBER OF CONGRESS, and a few private citizens as well.

It has been years since I read Riane Eisler's books:

The Chalice and the Blade: Our History, Our Future;

The Real Wealth of Nations: Creating a Caring Economics;

The Power of Partnership: Seven Relationships That Will Change Your...;

and many years since I toured with the author and Marija Gimbutas tracing the history of the goddesses through time and place.

Her notion of partnership resides deeply in my being, as though her words have become my words and her thoughts, mine.

Trump is the deep trough of the history of humankind. The peak occurred during the min-1970s and culture has been on the decline since. then, until we reached the bottom and into a swamp of greed, selfishness, and depravity.

There are some who want to confront the anger and violence of the fascist and in doing so, become fascist themselves. Is that what we want of the human race?

I don't think so! We are capable of something far more noble and courageous than that.

What are our options?

* gather clubs, guns, bombs, and fight to the death and destruction of fascists;

* laugh at the foolishness of violence, ridicule, mock, satirize, lampoon, and taunt fascists;

* cry, plead, beg, implore, request, and petition fascists;

* run and hide until the conflagration is over;

* go down on our knees, put our hands together, and pray until someone chops our heads off.

Do you recognize the pattern? Mad, Glad, Sad, Afraid, and Pray.

Are there other options?

Alan, do write your speech! We need it now more than ever before. Put your mental and emotional power into the piece and make profoundly clear that prayer is not the answer. Call to prayer insults human advancement and denies the real power comes from thought, ideas shared, plans developed, actions taken, and evaluation criteria established with the goal of saving lives, communities, and the planet.
