One of the scariest quotes I know of: that a person on his or her own would be considered incompetent if they believed in someone born of a virgin, who could walk on water, create food out of nothing, raise the dead, and then be killed and raised himself ... yet if over a billion people believe the same thing, it's no big deal.  There's a term for that:

Mass delusion.
