Here's an H.L. Mencken crack that's mightily reinforced by recent history:

  • Giving every man a vote has no more made men wise and free than Christianity has made them good.

To be the father of growing daughters is to understand something of what Yeats evokes with his imperishable phrase 'terrible beauty.' Nothing can make one so happily exhilarated or so frightened: it's a solid lesson in the limitations of self to realize that your heart is running around inside someone else's body. It also makes me quite astonishingly calm at the thought of death: I know whom I would die to protect and I also understand that nobody but a lugubrious serf can possibly wish for a father who never goes away.
― Christopher Hitchens

Don't let ANYONE ever say that Hitchens didn't love his kids.  I read this and all I can think is that he was head-over-heels for them, yet understood that they were NOT his property!

Totally agreed, Bertold.  I said it a little bit ago: The World Is Not Safe.

If you need a safe space, leave, go home, hug your teddy and suck your thumb until ready for university.

Spud, I'll endorse that quote without hesitation!

Any being that could create a universe, would be a great scientist.  It would value logic, reason, and evidence.  It would place a negative value on faith.

If there is a God, atheism must seem to Him as less of an insult than religion.
― Edmond de Goncourt

Considering the wildly extravagant and self-contradictory claims made by religions, I tend to concur!

Me too.

Loren and Gary -- I resemble that remark.

Gary, I don't surprise easily, but that one caught me good and proper. Your Poe quote is excellent!
