I will be taking a reduced role at Atheist Nexus as of Oct 1, 2017.  I will not be moderating this group after that time, and I will be re-zeroing most of my groups and comments.

If there are quotations that you wish to save, I recommend that you save them now.

Since this is a popular group, I recommend that a member start up a new group for quotations, so that the members can continue adding and reading their favorite quotes.

Thanks and happy reading!

Science should not be something that’s just thrown about to try and dictate policy in Washington DC.

Thanks for the latte Bertold,

Hating others does take the focus off oneself.....I was wondering... anger is experienced when one feels violated or trespassed upon vs hate is taught to get validation from others.

Thomas--the quote is from a non-fiction work, Notes of a Native Son, published in 1955. I don't know specifically what he was referring to. The reason I thought it sounded significant is that a lot of hate seems to be a tribal projection directed at an "other." Without that hate, haters might be forced to confront truths they don't want to face. (Just my take, which along with $6.00 will buy you a latte)

What pain is James Baldwin referring to?

I imagine that one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, that they will be forced to deal with pain.

It's my experience that the very practice of science attunes one to a rich, mysterious world in which startling complexity resides around every corner. It often engenders humility.
Humility is one of the loveliest of human traits. It's often hard--won, and in every case it exists, it foments acceptance, kindness, and open-mindedness. These are qualities that improve the lives of all who experience them.

Atheists’ anger doesn’t prove that we’re selfish, or joyless, or miserable. It shows that we have compassion, and a sense of justice. We’re angry because we see terrible harm all around us, and we feel desperately motivated to stop it.
― Greta Christina

Greta hits the nail on the head here. There are tremendous wrongs which are inflicted on humankind, some natural, some caused by the very church we invented, and while they submit to that, claiming god's will, we rail against it, look for solutions to it, and wonder why they DON'T.

GREAT quote from Bertold.  Communism vs. capitalism, Sunni vs. Shi'ite, our country vs. yours, even atheism vs. religion -- it's just to pass time and keep ourselves busy.  This from Ikkyu (15th-century Zen monk and poet):

'In this world we eat, shit, sleep and wake up. After that, all we have to do is die."

. . . there is not enough greatness or horror in any man or woman to turn the page of a vast nation.

Dykes of Courage sounds like a new superhero flick.
