A place to share the words of others (or your own!) which have been impactful in your life, whether they're serious, poignant, humorous, or just something worth noting.

I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I've been an atheist and probably a good deal longer.  My admiration for those who enjoy reputations as wordsmiths extends even further back, whether we're talking about John F. Kennedy's assertion: "We choose to go to the moon," George Santayana's warning: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it," or James T. Kirk's deft observation when faced with the dauntingly huge First Federation ship: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... poker!"

The realm of atheist activism has had its own share of verbal craftsmen and women, from Madalyn Murray O'Hair's: "An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church." to Aron Ra's succinct: "If you can't show it, you don't know it."

Regardless of the topic, these are words which are capable of fomenting inspiration, reflection, and sometimes even action.  They can educate and illuminate the human condition and allow us to better know ourselves.  That said, here is an open invitation to share those words which have been particularly meaningful or impactful or timely or just special to you for one reason or another.

Let's share those words and have fun!

One bit of clerical business: please hold your quotes in the comment area below to 20 lines or 200 words.  One comment should not so dominate the Home page of this group that no other comment is visible.  That way, the briefer comments and quotes of all participants are more likely to be seen, read, and appreciated.  If you have a long quote or commentary, create a post, please.

I've seen something similar, Patricia, but don't recall exactly where.

No one ever learned anything new or useful based on a LIE.

Seriously ... how could they? And I'm looking at YOU, religion!

"Cats just quietly take whatever comes their way."

Cat Nana in The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa.

I think that's a good example. And yes, it's another tearjerker.

Gestures are all that I have.
-- "Enzo," The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein

Fact is, gestures are all any of Enzo's kind have. You see, Enzo is a dog, a Golden Retriever, and the beloved property of one Denny Swift, whose occupation and passion are that of a racecar driver. As it turns out, those passions are shared with his four-legged friend in a way not even his owner might guess.

I mention this because I read the book sometime back, and just watched the movie on HBO last night. Yeah, it's a tearjerker and no, I don't mind, because there's another bit of wisdom I posted here a while back which speaks to that bond between human and animal:

Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened.
-- Anatole France

Yes, lots of dvd's ....movies, & music concerts too.

Would love to have something like that but Rick is not into music so I just use headphones & my cd player or mp3 player. Other than that, there are 60 cd channels on our cablevision which I have going all day long.

I hear you, Patricia.  As it comes to music, this is what I have to listen to:

Add to that a separate home theater with several hundred DVDs, Blu-rays, 4ks, and a couple hundred LaserDiscs (and I haven't mentioned my book library!) and I'm in fair shape!

In my house, I have my kitties, my books, my free downloads of books, my huge collection of music, emails, texting, You Tube, my foods/cooking, my treadmill, my exerbike, my encyclopaedia[computer], my games[computer], deer visiting the yard, birds at the feeder, a roof, doors with locks, & I'm still breathin'...... oh yeah.....& Rick.

My new motto......KWITCHURRBITCHIN.
