Watched a half of the first college basketball game of the season between #2 Kentucky and #4 Duke. With mostly freshmen, Duke overwhelmed Ky., 118-84. They looked unstoppable. I never saw this, either: both teams had identical halves of 59 and 42 points! (I went to bed at halftime.)

Whew! Baseball is finally over. I barely watched the World Series because each game was interminable-- batters and pitchers playing "cat and mouse". Pretty boring, all in all. Besides, I really didn't care who won. Plus, I got sick of all the players pointing to the sky after they did something "great". God cares. Yeh, right!

Hope some of you got to watch Purdue's walloping of #2 ranked Ohio State last night. Although I went to IU, I was rooting for the Boilermakers against the hated Buckeyes. It was a very emotional game, as the players and fans were supporting a fellow student suffering from bone cancer. Perhaps there is a god. (not really)

On the other end of the spectrum, my Indiana team lost a tough one, as usual, to Penn St. (33-28). As I was growing up, my father (an IU grad) would remind me not to expect too much out of IU football. 60 some years later, "t'was ever thus". Year in and year out, they're perpetual losers. I have a hard time watching them.

I might as well put all my "sports talk" comments in one post:

First, Drew Brees was magic last night, passing Peyton Manning for all time passing yardage. Both men have Indiana connections--Peyton played for the Colts, Drew for Purdue.

It was (and usually is) difficult for me to hear the announcers over the background crowd noise, thanks to "engineers" that place mikes all over the place. I usually mute the sound anyway. "Color" announcers drive me crazy. This "Booger" fellow is unbearable.

Third, replays. Watching a baseball playoff game, a first base umpire's call was overturned twice in two innings. That's a good thing, but I wonder how often game outcomes were affected by bad calls, pre-video replays? Perhaps championships?

And lastly, why do black men tatoo themselves when the tatoos can't be seen?

My Indiana (U) team almost always loses to Loren's Ohio (St.), and this year was no exception (28 straight losses?). However, it's usually a hard fought game, so I was proud of the Hoosiers. Maybe next year? Doubtful.

Loren, I've been following the Browns, rooting for them as I do for most underdogs. I think they're on the right track.

After only one Cub run through 9 innings, I went to bed hoping my not watching would end the jinx. Alas, not to happen. They lost in 13. They're done. At least I won't have to suffer any more this season!

Revisiting an older comment: Randall wrote about a game that he "sort of watched--book in hand, sound muted."

I experienced something like that at a band practice a year or so ago when our host, who's a rabid Eagles fan, had the game on, muted, so he could keep an eye on the score -- while we rehearsed!

Shall we also mention the Browns - Raiders game, which the Browns had won until they lost it?  They may have played far better than they did most of last year, and Mayfield is encouraging to watch, but it's still one more in the "L" column when, with just a bit more effort, it could have been a "W."

Just one more reason why I'm sick of the whole stupid mess.

My jinx on the Cubs continues. Missed Sunday's 10 run game, but suffered through Monday's one run, 3 hit loss. Perhaps I won't watch anymore playoff games. Yeah, right.  Oh yes, and I jinx the Colts, too. (Watched the very end of their folly loss Sunday.)

Just watched the highlights of the OSU - TCU game.  About as well-fought as any college football game I've ever slept through [grin!].  Seriously, I think that if anything is going to make the SEC sit up and take notice of the Buckeyes, it damned well should be that game.
