In background center is an ugly old lilac that I brought into my garden from the root of the lilac my grandmother planted over her mother's grave in the woods of northern Idaho at Emida. It has a lovely white blossom, but the shrub became spindly and not at all pretty. I have been cutting out three branches a year. This year I will cut out the last remaining three. Notice in front of the old shrub are many new sprouts from the old root. They look healthy and have buds this year. The new replaces the old in the natural order of things.
