Singapore was quite a shock to me. I had no idea it was so expensive! Upon arriving, I bought 2 packs of cigarettes at a 7-11 store downtown. They cost me S$24. That's $20 in U.S. money!! A bottle of beer is S$6 in the store.A flask of cheap vodka is S$22. Yikes!
Singapore is a very modern, clean, city-state with a no-nonsense government. Their infrastructure is first-rate. People drive reasonably and generally follow their laws cooperatively. They seem to think that the strict laws are worth the security that comes with enforcement of those laws. Although crimes do happen, they're far less common than in most places.
If you go to Singapore, take essentials with you -- don't plan on buying them there unless you want to spend a lot more than you normally would. And be sure to NOT litter. The fine is S$500 and the laws are strictly enforced.
