The popular book When Bad Things Happen to Good People shows a rabbi's beliefs shifting towards the first alternative, a god who's not omnipotent. It's significant that the title says "when", not "why": shit happens; there is no "why". The author sees God in people's empathy and responses to injustice and tragedy.
