The Incans in Peru celebrated the return of the sun in their practice, "tying of the sun". The Spanish Conquistadores never found Machu Picchu, and so Machu Picchu remains the only extant example of this early Incan practice of using the large stone column, the Intihuatana, to tie the post to the sun, to prevent the sun from escaping.
Priests also sacrificed llamas and virgins at Machu Picchu.
