Atheism in 2010

Posted on May 9, 2010 at 12:48pm 5 Comments

One would assume by now that people would be more open to the idea of Atheism in 2010. However, it is not the common thread. Instead, the U.S. welcomed the idea of having a president of color. I say of color because many individuals would argue to label Obama as African-American is denouncing his European Ancestry. Second, it would be the same defense that Thomas Jefferson used when referring to Benjamin Banneker. He felt that it was Banneker’s mixed heritage that made it possible for him to…

Objectivity Manifests Misrepresentation

Gay men continually traverse through society as the triple other. Being labeled sterile, androgynous and quite often ambiguous the status of “eunuch” is quite comforting. This is because of the fear of fragmentation. Minority men, especially Black men, live in a constant state of fear and anxiety. This is because society, ethnicity, family, disease, ideal masculinity regulate their identity. For those who dare to accept their sexuality… Continue

Locks is it a black thing or a human thing?

Posted on December 16, 2009 at 11:48am 2 Comments

So, I am a locks wearing man. They are shoulder length. I love them and I can't get enough of them. However, with that said, they come with a cliche' or a stigma. With in my own African American culture they were feared because it was a revelation of the natural hair texture of African Americans. Furthermore, the hair is not combed and produces a "matted" appearance. However, the stigma associated with "locking" one's hair has changed because of the cosmetological innovations that have taken… Continue

Hey Anwar:

Thanks for the words of appreciation and congrats on getting into the EdD program! I didn't know you were going into the education field (I do teacher professional development in addition to youth leadership development in high schools, so this is near and dear to my heart), which school are you going to?
Best,
Sikivu

Hi Anwar,
Thanks for the hello.
My Dad died last week after a long period of suffering and decline. He had a good life. Some thoughts on that here.
Home life is mixed bag. What can I say.
Off work for study for a couple months. That is wonderful.
So much for me. How are you doing? Your photos are great. The dancers are truly beautiful.

Hi Anwar,
Thanks for the "hi". I've been a bit down. Work work work work work; partner on vacation in Shanghai, so on my own for a little while. Well, what can I do? Don't let it bother you, it'll pass.
Anyway, hope YOU are doing well!
Daniel

Hi Anwar,
Glad you replied.
The West is a big place - like talking about the East, although probably not as much variation as there is between, say, NY and Savannah. I tried several times to move West, mostly to either San Diego or San Francisco, but that wasn't my fate. When I finally did, it was to a college town in Oregon, then Portland, now suburb of Portland. I felt like I came "home", it was so "me". But we are all different.

You have a long life ahead, nothing wrong with trying different places and ideas. Eventually. I think most people find what suits them most.

It funny, I had a friend who moved from Malaysia to WA state. He has seen so many pictures of the Pacific NW, and thought it would all be lush Fir forests. No one told him that was only on the Western side of the state. He wound up in Pullman WA, in the high desert, about as not-lush as possible, and hundreds of miles from the Fir forests. BUt eventually he did find his way to what he wanted.

Hey Anwar, Any news about grad school? And how's your semester going? We just started our spring break, so I am busy catching up on all the work that has been accumulating for the last few weeks.

Otherwise, I'm hoping to finish my book this week--what a relief it will be to have this burden off my shoulders. If you get a spare minute, let me know how life's treating you.

Talk to you later,
ml

Hey Anwar,
You'd said you were interested in contributing to the global atheist experiences project I'm working on, but I'm not sure which of your blogs you wanted to share. I quite appreciated the one titled "Objectivity Manifests Misrepresentation." One of the comments below it stated that you were working on something similar regarding atheism; I look forward to it. Is that (future?) blog the one you mean to contribute for the book project?
As a totally random aside, my brother-in-law's name is Anwar.
Thanks,
Janna

Dear Anwar,
Yes, I would definitely appreciate your contribution to the essay project. I want to include as many different voices as possible, including voices from within various American communities. Are you interested in submitting the blog you mentioned, or adapting it for the project, or...?
Thanks very much for your interest and I look forward to hearing from you again,
Janna
