Oops. I did not think my whole long message would show on your page. I guess I assumed just part of it would show in a window, with the rest out of sight unless someone scrolled down. Sorry to take up so much space.

Hi Ben. I'm glad you found this site too.  Welcome to a world where the lady who got hit in the head with a big rock is irrelevant.  I think the head blow does explain a lot, though.

Cripes, SDA boarding school?! And the way you got sent there-- Ben, you are a refugee from tyranny!!  I'm so glad you had the strength and courage to get out, and that you found Atheist Nexus. I also was cloistered in SDA schools to maintain my indoctrination, but only day schools, not boarding. I've heard stories, though.

My mom and still-SDA sister and my sister's family go to Loma Linda University church.  Also, a cousin I grew up with goes there and is an LLU professor. Bet we'll find you know someone that knows someone I know there, like you said. I'm only 3rd generation SDA, but my ex-husband is also 5th generation.  His kids would be 6th generation but we all escaped.

Damn, I'm sorry about college. You're doing a good job of manning up to do for yourself what shoiuld have been done for you by joining Job Core, IMHO. My Dad refused to pay for college if I majored in English like I wanted too.  As my folks were driving me to La Sierra, Dad told me to change my mind or we were going to turn around. Turned out he meant it. My sister got no college when she tried to major in English too.  But hey, When I went to Academy they didn't teach us Shakespeare or any other literature because Ellen White said fiction and novels were sinful, tools of the devil.

BTW, I just found out a couple of weeks ago that I've got ADD too. For me, it was a big relief.  It instantly put aspects of my life in focus and allowed me to see life-long patterns.  I know you feel pretty screwed over about meds. I hate it too when people ignore science, especially when they try to say you are morally bad instead of neurologically different.  Been doing some research. Pretty solid evidence that it's genetic, though a crappy environment like yours could , no doubt, make it worse.

I reject a deficiency model of ADD. We are different from the dominant brain style, but I think we do have a lot to add that is different and positive, for example, lots of creativity. Best psychiatrist authors I've found are Edward Hallowell and John Ratey. They're both ADD, too. They don't just talk about the problems, they also talk about the positive characteristics ADD/ADHD people often have, like creativity. They say these guys had ADD/ADHD: Thomas Edison, Ben Franklin, Mozart... on and on. Check them out online.

I also like Thom Hartmann's ideas a lot--best. His son has ADHD. He looked at ADD/ADHD  from the perspective of evolution and developed a theory that we evolved for life as hunters.  Our common characteristics are a great match for that.  He and some others say we aren't deficient, we're neurologically different.  My therapist is also ADD and says, "If there were more of us, they would be labelled "Flexibility Defficient," "Creativity Defficient" and... (Any labels you'd like to sling back at them?)  Feel free to share them with me.

Would enjoy keeping in touch with you, my fellow sane and intelligent ex-SDA friend. I think we can send private messages. Anyway, best to you.

Thinking of you with the problem of no place to stay. How are you? My sister was homeless for awhile too.

Welcome, Ben.  Congratulations on breaking free from religion.  Good luck on moving forward to correct the wrongs.  You may like to join the group Recovering from Religion.  We deal with anger there.

Welcome, Ben! Glad you could join us. :D

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that's on your mind, Hang With Friends. You might also like Ex-Adventists and Seventh-day Atheists and Recovering from Religion.

I also recommend Eco-Logical and Climate Concerns, since the climate is changing so drastically.

After you've searched for topics of interest in "Groups" above and in the "Forums", don't forget to look at recent activity which hides along the right margin of the page all the way at the bottom.

On a personal note, I've developed an animated gif technique, sort of “pull quote marries slideshow”. Samples are scattered across various groups, but you can find them easily by going to my twitter account. Each tweet has a link (after the description and before the hashtags) to a visually rich example here at Atheist Nexus. If you like them, please follow me

Hi Ben

Welcome to this world of rationality and peace, where pure common sense like yours has been enough for you to escape SDA and understand the open freethinking wisdom of non-believers. You are plainly cleverer than the rest of the family.

We invite you to join the busy group "ORIGINS: Universe, Astronomy, Life, Earth, Humans, Religion, Gods, Atheism, Evolution, Darwin..." with 700 discussion topics and 3600+ members.
