Let me explain more of who I am as an atheist. I am not an elitist. I don't think I'm smarter than religious people or feel any sort of intellectual superiority to them. I don't pity them or try to convert them. There are a lot of reasons for people believing what they believe. I like to leave others to do what they will. Unless you are Mormon, then all bets are off. :)
I grew up in the Adventist Church and thanks to parochial school I read the Bible a lot. Even in grade school, 2+2 was not coming up to 4. I asked a lot of questions and received a lot of half-baked answers. At 13 I began questioning my faith and at 14 I lost it. When I turned 18 I joined the Army and haven't been to church since.
But I was an agnostic. I didn't want to fully reject everything I used to believe. I wasn't a passive agnostic either. I watched both sides and read vigorously. I watched the biblical archaeologists find cities of the Bible and the scientists that made primordial soup to see proteins form.
Then one day I ran into The 12th Planet and became an atheist. And an even bigger fruit loop. :)
Aliens splicing a little genetic material into cave man answered a lot of questions for me and filled the void. So now I get crap from science and church goers.
