Polymath replied to La Gaya Sienza's discussion The wrongness of homosexuality and other such diverse(perverse)ities
"You do not have the right to be unoffended. In fact, a big part of the freedom of speech is the protection of speech that may offend someone else simply because you disagree with them. Let's face it, if you are offended by two (or more)…"

"Tipler was once a great physicist and has since become a laughing stock. His book 'The Omega Point' seems to be almost pure fantasy. This recent announcement is, unfortunately, in line with his decline."

Polymath replied to Jezzy's discussion Emotions vs. Logic
"I am a professional mathematician, an endeavor that is commonly seen as the epitome of reason. But if you talk to professional mathematicians, you will find that 'beauty' is one of their great motivators. In other words, emotions are what…"

Polymath replied to Danny's discussion What if there is a god?
"Which definition of God? A creator of the universe? OK, cool. I'd want to know the physics of the deity's realm that made it possible to create universes. Giver of moral laws? Not so interesting to me. Why would I accept the desires of…"

Polymath replied to Anna's discussion Do men exist that do not want and do not have children? in the group Atheist Singles
"I have been an atheist all my life and have never wanted to reproduce. I was able to get a vasectomy at a relatively early age (23), but I was refused this operation a few times because doctors refuse to believe someone could not want children at…"

Polymath replied to Sarah Elle's discussion Atheists - What do you believe? in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"Not completely true. The weak force acts on matter and anti-matter slightly differently. As to physicists 'subscribing' to the existence of anti-matter, this suggests it is a point of contention. On the contrary, we regularly make…"

Polymath replied to Sarah Elle's discussion Atheists - What do you believe? in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"On the contrary, we understand electrodynamics (and hence charges) quite well. The attraction/repulsion is due to how the charged particles interact with photons. The bipolar aspects you are looking at, though, break down when we look at the strong…"

Well done you for engaging on a second doctorate.
I got my doctorate at Oxford in physics and had a career in physics and in meteorology. Archaeology had been a longstanding interest so I returned to Oxford for undergraduate and MSc studies. I am currently wondering whether to go for another doctorate, but only hesitating because of the effect that it would have on family commitments.

Why thank you. I saw that you are a physicist. What areas do you specialize in? I am currently working towards a PhD (my second) in cosmology/astrophysics.

Me too, longtime atheist. Welcome to Atheist Nexus----the world of reasoning, rational sense, and good friends.

Terry Meaden (Oxford; physicist; archaeologist; see My Page)
Founder of the busy discussion group
"ORIGINS: Universe, Life, Humankind, Religion, Darwin..." We seek to understand the mysteries of the universe, and how life and humans and religion and everything began.
There are lots of good discussion topics and many video films including ten lectures from Stanford University on evolution and Darwin.
