I was brought up in a family of people who are by descent Catholic. My Father has both Catholic and Protestant ancestry from Ireland and my Mother had Catholic ancestry from Germany.

I don't know if my parents ever went to church regularly as children, or as adults, or even if they choose to get married in a church because they themselves were Christian.

However, Five weeks after i was born, nearly a year after my parents marriage, my mother died of Cancer.

I know from my dads own… Continue

Greetings, Fred! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus lately. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D You might feel more at home.

Fred, I'm also on, if you use that too, or more often.!/profile.php?id=1333977288&sk=wall

I tend to use Facebook more often that Atheist Nexus at the moment, mostly because most of my friends, and family, are on Facebook.

Hello Fred. I’ve been an atheist, and non-religious, for approximately a year and a half.  Before that I was involved in various forms of Christianity (I considered myself a Christian, albeit a doubting one and an unhappy one) and then with Spiritualism (I didn’t consider myself a Spiritualist, but someone that liked some of their views and believed some of their claims).  During my time as a believer I always had doubts about the existence of God (many a time I found it hard to imagine how God, if it existed, could be a good God, considering the many natural disasters, disabilities, syndromes and everyday sufferings) and I always found it hard to accept that there’s a Devil, and especially the doctrines of Original Sin and that of Redemption and Atonement (why should I be punished for the transgressions of my ancestors?  Why am I worthy of damnation just because some couple in some unknown couple at some unknown point in history ate a piece of fruit against their Creator’s wishes?  These ideas made no sense and seemed terribly cruel).  I began to lose my Christian faith gradually after reading the book, ‘The Unauthorized Version: Truth and Fiction in the Bible’, by the historian, Robin Lane Fox.  Over time, after more thinking and more reading, etc, metaphysical explanations no longer seemed rational or evidence based and my faith in God, the afterlife, the soul, etc, naturally lessened.  How about you?  What is your journey, so to speak?

Hello Fred. Welcome to this friendly community of freethinkers who see that religion is nothing but a fraud used to control vulnerable people, often starting with defenceless children.
