Hello Glen! I just wanted to invite you to show support for our local chapter. I know your an active member in Houston too. Check out our website: http://www.kha-atheists.org -- we shook hands at the meetup I think back in December. Nice to know your active on A/N too.
Yes, I am very active in Houston. I have a volunteer group called the SECULAR Center. We have a group page here at A/N. I have also been to the HCOF service, in fact I will be speaking at the service in December! Hope to see you there sometime!
Keep visiting the American Atheist website and you will be able to find all the information your need to attend a convention. When reving up for a convention, the site posts persons wanting to share travel expenses with others. That's a great option. I got the shirt that I have on in my photo at Seattle - site of the last convention.
Hope you can make the next convention!
I'm as clueless as you when it comes to the "thinker as avatar" issue. Perhaps it's a default if a new member doesn't download a picture.
As far as my goal, I'm currently the Chairman of Metroplex Atheists. We meet weekly on Wednesday evenings for socializing and once a month for business & educational purposes. We have a lot of younger members and they have a bunch of kids.
We are building awareness of the atheist position in any way we can to get it accepted from the public at large. We've visited churches as a group and talked with xians about how we're the same except for our naturalist worldview. I had a dialogue with a Baptist minister in front of his congregation with a bunch of atheists present (some from the North Texas Church of Freethought) to let them know we're just regular people. I've been on local TV once and was on "Way of the Master" radio show, and spoke on the state capitol steps about separation of church & state.
Most of what we do, though, is provide a way for a bunch of non-believers to get together in an accepting environment so we can talk about what ever we want. We have a good group and the group has a good time.
I guess that's a little longer than I intended but perhaps you get the picture.
It kinda depends on what size neck you mean. Grapevine is between Fort Worth and Dallas on the Tarrant County (Fort Worth) side north of DFW airport. In fact, if you've ever taken off or landed there, you have been in Grapevine. Most of the airport is within Grapevine.
Humble (excuse me 'Umble) seems like a lonely place to be an atheist, or is there a hotbed of non-believers down there?
Do you know about the Texas Freethinkers Convention in October in Austin?
