"Joan, I think success with a third party will only happen with the right candidate married to the right issue. Unfortunately, the electorate is afraid of change, which might effect the pocketbook. This is understandable to a point, but they should…"
"Very impressive Ted. I appreciate your contribution. Yours is a very clear eyed understanding of war.
Being physically unfit for the service (hearing and eyesight), I have no similar experience, Most of what I know came from my Dad, who was…"
""Ours is an exceedingly belligerent nation, founded on domination and sustained by war."
I think this is one more reason why we need to grow up. The world is a dangerous place. Threatening to kill anyone who gets in our way is not going to…"
""Thing is, he would fall to the left of almost all of today's GOP, as would every president we've had so far."
If I remember correctly, he was elected because he appeared to be a reasonable person. He was not Pat Buchanan or any…"
""Atheism as a belief system has peaked and its share of humanity is shrinking, demographic studies indicate."
I'm not sure how "I don't believe in the existence of god(s)" became a "belief system".
"It's worth considering the effect stoning has on the crowd. The message is "I'd better toe the line or this will happen to me". Incredibly effective as a conservative tool to maintain social control. I'd say…"
"This country couldn't even raise enough money to run an army when it depended upon the kind hearts of the states. That's why they held a party called the Constitutional Convention. It was a riot, went over big. They decided to hold a…"
"Michael, If you're aware of the increasing income disparity, you must also be aware of the increasing "wealth" disparity. If so, what I don't understand is why, with this evidence in front of you, you continue to believe that…"
""replacing, but not invalidating the old covenant."
And with this began a huge growth spurt in legal and religous employment. Now that I think about it, removing confusion from religious doctrine would be the death of itself. It could…"
"Yes, who were these people in the Council of Nicea? The book could certainly have used an appendix. Many how-to books should have been included, beginning with "How To Effectively and Efficiently Stone Your Neightbor". I'm sure…"
"Originally, there was ED. Now you've gotten me worried about EED (Eternal Erectile Dysfunction). I wonder if this is preventable with some treatment in the here and now. Stressing over the latter may trigger the former.
Maybe I missed the point…"
Appreciate your comment (with a chuckle). Few people grasp the magical 50% threshold, or any other percentage for that matter. If one person in 300 survived a mining collapse, for example, it would be a "miracle" from god (and "thank god" uttered). Bad luck for the other 299. Crazy.
To try to encompass all of Robert Heinlein's philosophy by recommending one book is likely impossible. I COULD be tempted to suggest Time Enough For Love, even though it (sort of) requires that you read Methuselah's Children first (it really CAN stand on its own, though). There is a lot of RAH's philosophy in Time Enough and in many of his other books.
If you want to have a hard, strong look at his attitude on religion, I have three suggestions:
• Job: A Comedy of Justice. This REALLY gets to the heart of the matter ... and it should have been his FIFTH Hugo Award winner. • Stranger In a Strange Land. All you have to do is look at the gross parody which is Fosters "Church of the New Revelation" to see what he thinks of current-day organized religion. • If this goes on... from the collection, Revolt in 2100. One of the first pieces Heinlein wrote which dealt directly with religion and its leanings toward imperialism.
These are among my faves. We can talk about this if you like or you can go your own way. In any case, I'd be interested in hearing your reaction to whatever you do get into.
