I just wanted to mention that how well you are taught evolution really depends on teacher. There are way too many teachers who don't 'believe' in evolution and appear to do a pretty poor job teaching it. However, it is better than in South Carolina where I taught environmental education and wasn't even allowed to use the word evolution.
PS I saw that you liked cricket, is there somewhere in Phoenix where you can actually watch a match?
In Arizona evolution is fairly prominent in the curriculum for life science, however, my mentor teacher (I was a first year teacher last year) tried to tell me it was a 'minor' standard and not to spend much time on it at all. I pretty much started the year with evolution and constantly referred to it all year. Some of the feedback I got from the kids is that they really enjoyed the evolution aspect of class.
