Thanks for joining Hang With Friends. Sorry about your family situation. As  young person who will have to cope with the Anti-Atheist government shaping up, you might want to consider Writing to Congress. By sharing our ideas it's so much easier to make calls and write letters to congress. It's a start in fighting the tsunami of hate.

Welcome, Gwen! Glad you could join us. :D

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that's on your mind, Hang With Friends. You might also like Women Atheists, Female Atheists, and possibly Feminist Atheists.

I also recommend Eco-Logical and Climate Concerns, since the climate is changing so drastically.

Writing to Congress makes it easier to call or write, as we share ideas.

After you've searched for topics of interest in "Groups" above and in the "Forums", don't forget to look at recent activity which hides along the right margin of the page all the way at the bottom.

I wouldn't really call it trolling as much as intellectual cowardice.  He came on hard, bashing people who subscribe to the Big Bang theory, which is the scientific consensus about the origin of the universe.

What I'm referring to is mostly on this comment page, although it started a little ways back, on the previous page:

I asked him for one thing ... anything ... that would make me take him seriously.  Nothing ... just an argument from his own authority, based upon his undergraduate studies on the subject, which does not impress me much.

He's done that sort of thing, on the exact same subject, elsewhere on the site.  I should have known better than to engage.

Sorry about turning your one discussion thread into a complete crap-show.  As you can see, being an atheist doesn't automatically make you rational.  Hell, I've known some atheists who I would say are irrational for becoming atheists, since their reasons for coming to their conclusion are ... well ... irrational.  It takes a lot of effort to have thinking as screwed up as those guys, but they somehow manage it.

I looked up more about what that guy was talking about, since that discussion.  It's a bit of nonsense pseudoscience that was debunked something like a century ago.  It's a cool idea, sure, but what the model predicts doesn't match what we observe and measure, when we look at the world outside of that mathematical model.  I had to look up stuff on my own, since he refused to provide anything, instead falling back upon his undergraduate study of physics, of which I probably have as much education as he does.  Strangely, I'm not willing to accept his authoritative word on the subject.

Anyway, you have to sort out the occasional nut, sometimes.  Hell, there are atheists who are 9/11 Truthers.  It isn't many, expressed as a percentage, but people like that tend to be noisy enough that there seem to be more than there are.  Another group of nuts are the anarcho-capitalist libertarians, but I would need another comment to even start getting into them.

At least we don't get many of the spiritualist sorts, around here.  We've had a few that I've seen, but they don't tend to stick around long.  If someone believes in spirits, psychic powers, reincarnation, and the like ... well, as long as those sorts of people don't believe in any gods, they're technically atheists and pass the one requirement to be allowed onto the site.

However the "atheist community" which is nebulously referred to, mostly by religious sorts who hate and fear atheists, is made up of scientifically-minded skeptics.  The skepticism angle is far more important than the atheism part, in my opinion, since if skepticism is properly applied to religious subjects, it inevitably leads to atheism.  I've never seen any religious claims that stand up to proper scrutiny.

I was a bad student. I didn't really learn how to read until I was 8 and was defensive that I was stupid. I was hyper, had crazy add and didn't act right It continued pretty much until high school I was drinking and did not give a fuck.

When I first cupple of times tried weed I didn't get high. I didn't know how to smoke it. One day I was smoking in a group and one of the guys noticed I was a noob and taught me the propper way. He was very nice about it. When I got high my brain felt… Continue
