Welcome, Hannah! Glad you could join us. :D

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that's on your mind, Hang With Friends. You might also like Young Atheist Women, Women Atheists, Female Atheists, Former Christians, and possibly Feminist Atheists.

I also recommend Eco-Logical and Climate Concerns, since the climate is changing so drastically.

After you've searched for topics of interest in "Groups" above and in the "Forums", don't forget to look at recent activity which hides along the right margin of the page all the way at the bottom.

On a personal note, I've developed an animated gif technique, sort of “pull quote marries slideshow”. Samples are scattered across various groups, but you can find them easily by going to my twitter account. Each tweet has a link (after the description and before the hashtags) to a visually rich example here at Atheist Nexus. If you like them, please follow me

Hi Hannah
Well done. You are a clever girl. Welcome to this world of rationality and peace, where pure common sense can be quite enough to lead to the open freethinking wisdom common to non-believers like you and us.
We invite you to join the busy group "ORIGINS: Universe, Astronomy, Life, Earth, Humans, Religion, Gods, Atheism, Evolution, Darwin..." with 720 discussion topics and 3700 members.

Yeah, it will be a lot easier to come out of the closet, after you're moved out and no longer financially dependent upon your parents.  At that point, you'll be more able to address them adult-to-adult, and they won't be able to negatively influence you and try to force you to come back to Christ, as Christians often do.

Plus, when you're only seeing them once or twice a month, they'll be less inclined to start fights over religion and just enjoy the time you're together.  I came out to my parents when I was 13 or 14, and it caused a few tense years between my mother and me.  There were never any major problems, though, because of my father.  I suspect he was an atheist and was mitigating my mother's reaction.  They always had a very thoughtful, collaborative, planned-out approach to parenting.

Same deal for me, pretty much always questioning.  I have a vague memory of kindergarten CCD, sitting and listening to Bible stories and thinking that they were silly and like the fairytales I was read at home.

Ouch, how bad are the parents?  You might be better off keeping a lid on the atheism, if your parents are particularly crazy fundamentalists.

I was raised in a weekly-mass-attending Catholic family, myself.  It was really freaking annoying.  Most of the people I knew were religious.  I can relate.

It must be even worse, being in such a small town, with the higher religiosity.  Do you even know another atheist?  There's a moderately active atheist group in the Triad, but they're not nearly as busy as the Triangle group.

It helps that Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and Chapel Hill are wedged so tightly together.  It's easier to get activities going with the higher population-density.  The Triad is sprawled out so much more.  Hell, we have a few people drive in from Greensboro to the events that happen more on the Chapel Hill/Durham side, because our events have so many more people.
