Small changes........

Posted on August 14, 2009 at 2:10pm 1 Comment

There was a recent news item on Danish T.V. where an opposition politician from the Social Democratic Party, Christine Antorini, said that the "Our Father" prayer should no longer be used in schools. "It belongs in church and not in schools. We have Christian, Muslim and Jewish children......"

I wrote to her expressing my support but pointing out that children do not get their religion via their D.N.A. but through their upbringing. Therefore it would be more correct to say children of a… Continue

Have a listen to "Trees" on my music. It's by the daughter of an online friend and who's as yet undiscovered. Completely unprejudiced, I think it's good.

Hi-ho hi-ho, it's back to school I go.

The last day of freedom. Tomorrow I'll be back at health school, trying to get the bit of paper that says I'm qualified to do the job I've been doing for the past 12 years. Actually, it's long overdue but it was only in 2008 it became possible to get work experience credited and only take the theory part of the training. The other option has been to start again as a trainee on a trainee salary and spen 8 months in work experience as well as 6 months at school, so it's not so bad. I'll be… Continue

Not alone! At last!

Posted on December 31, 2008 at 1:33am 3 Comments

I've only started using a computer and the Internet this year, so it's been a pleasant surprise to discover that I'm not alone. Not that I live in an overwhelmingly religious society (Denmark) but I meet almost nobody who is a real skeptic/atheist. The vast majority spout things about "there are more things in heaven and earth", usually thinking they are quoting the Bible - it's Shakespeare - and without knowing the other half: "than are dreamt of in your philosophy, Horatio." Don't be narrow… Continue

That particular quote was on the Bad Opinion Generator, but I didn't snag it. Too many choices.

Greetings, Ian! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus lately. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D You might feel more at home.

We don't live on the mainland so I'm not sure for that area, but on the island (Okinawa) where we live there are signs that Capitalism is on the move here. There are lots of business' that are family owned and the giant chains that are on island are usually frequented mostly by Americans and the younger generation (30 and under). As the area becomes more and more Westernized though (with the younger generation trying to be like the Americans they encounter- with expensive clothes and cars-) there is a real potential for it to become a hotbed for Capitalism. There is already a division on the island of the wealthly (business) section and then the more country area. With large chains like starbucks and Mc'D poping up more and more the untapped areas are starting to be dominated.

The housing is also inflated, alot of it has to do with the American presence here. Since landlord's are told how much Americans are given to live overseas they jack up the price of rent. Allowing those with big paychecks (high ranking military members and folks that work in the business district) to get the best housing, while the folks who own their own business' or have fishing/general labor jobs are forced to live in housing that is very simliar to the slums/projects in the states. With the push by the new government in Tokyo to curb the persence of American military on the island things could potentially change, but if not then it will only be a matter of time before this island is completely polarized.

There is also an increase in Christianity on the island as well. You don't have to drive far before you run into a church, many of which offer faith-based schools. Which plenty of Americans and an increasing number of Okinawans are opting to send their children to. While Okinawans generally don't care what your belief system is, there is a real push among the younger generation to be more "American".
It's 1140pm here so I hope that makes some kind of sense. And free of typos LOL.
