Atheism isn't enough - and it isn't very satisfying

I'm an atheist. Have been since I stopped being agnostic when i was a teen. I went through a 2 week existential depression and realized,  nope, don't believe and that was that. I literally cannot imagine what it is like to believe in supernaturalism never having experienced that with the exception of some dabbling with a ouiga board while a tween. I'm not shy about my atheism. It's part of who I am and part of my philosophical development. And that's key = it's part of my philosophic…See More

Why Humanism should matter to atheists

Posted on April 12, 2016 at 2:00pm 3 Comments

There is a lot of confusion about Humanism within the atheist community.

First, not everyone knows what it is. Those that do often think of it as a form of atheism. Some people think of Humanism as a nice way to say you are an atheist without triggering the negativity association with the word…

Humanism and Self Help - Mutually Exclusive?

Posted on March 15, 2016 at 1:00pm 2 Comments

Self help has a bad reputation within the secular community. And for good reason. Much of what passes for self help is woo.

Psuedo-science non-science causes real harm. But that doesn't mean Humanists should shy away from providing self help to people.

100s of millions of people look for help in the self help market each year. They need help on everything from depression and divorce to motivation and leadership skills. By ignoring their needs we:

1) Fail to…

Diffrerent paths to Humanism

Posted on March 8, 2016 at 2:36pm 0 Comments

I don't hide my Humanism. I have learned over the years of being out that I do harm by hiding my values.  People want and need to learn about this secular philosophy, so every time we hide our humanism and talk about something else, we prevent these people from finding a philosophic home that will not only help them live better, but it will allow them to finally through off the last vestiges of religious thought.

There are a lot of different ways people come to Humanism. Some…

I enjoyed you Humanist Thought for 11/8/2011.  Mentally preparing for the worst-case-scenario sounds morbid at first blush, but is a very good tool for dealing with worry. And since the worst case almost never happens, it helps us see that our lives are, in fact, quite good.

Keep up the good work.

Jennifer,  just listened yesterday to your interview with Swoopy on Skepticality.  I'm looking forward to purchasing your book and learning more about what you have to say.  You have such a great attitude and outlook on life and toward other people.  Carl

P.S.  I'm so jealous that you grew up in a secular household!
