reddit atheism section

I “came out” as an atheist to my parents at 13. My dad told me it was “Just a phase and he went through it too.” But I’m almost 15 and still am strong in my beliefs. For all other people that came out as atheist at a young age, did your parents tell you this too?

Why do people of faith pray if God already has a plan for everything and it’s all up to him?

This has always confused me as a nearly lifelong atheist. If everything is God’s plan and he’s going to do what he wants to do, why bother praying for the specific outcome you want from a situation? It makes me sick how often a family member or dear friend of a religious person I know becomes terminally ill or critically injured in an accident, and after weeks to months of spamming social media with prayer requests and badly written religious poetry against cartoon images of Jesus or angels (often with at least one grammatical or spelling error), one of two things happens:

  1. The loved one recovers, and the person praises God and raves about how everyone’s prayers were answered.

  2. The loved one dies, and the person says that God called them home, that God must have needed them early for a special purpose, that the loved one is now in heaven and not suffering anymore, yadda yadda.

If prayer works, wouldn’t God decide that someone with 500+ people praying for them is worth saving? And if he’s going to decide who to save and who to “call home” of his own accord anyway, why do people waste time praying?

I’m wondering if any atheists who were formerly religious could offer some insight on this. I know I’d be ripped to shreds if I posited this to any active member of the religious community.

I pissed off a lot pro-lifer’s and other religious protesters when my boyfriend and I were visiting DC.

We were holding hands and we heard the following:

“You gays will go to hell!”

“Trump hates gays.”

My personal favorite: Make America Pray and Straight Again.”

We just smiled at them and said thank you. Boy did that make them mad. You would have thought I pissed on their book.

Is It Wrong to Exclusively Wanting to Date Only Atheist?

My dating game has always been pretty so so, but as a young girl in her 20 of course it is only natural for me to attract some men. Unfortunately though, I couldn't accept anyone since I am looking strictly for an atheist/agnostic.

My reasoning simply is to avoid future problem. I've dated Christian and Muslim before and both tried to convert me to their faith. Buddhist is out of the question since most of them are chinese and in my place of origin they wouldn't let their son date a non chinese like me, it is the case too with hindu. Other than that, the reason why I want to date an atheist/agnostic is to share stuff I can't share with those who have a religious belief.

I talked about this with my friends and they said that my reasoning is very shallow and will limit my experience. They also said that it is morally wrong for me to discriminate my date based on belief. What do you think?

(Keep in mind that I live in a place where atheism is a very huge deal and not something you could easily get away with. Also people are defined by their religion, that's why i am making it an important point)

i am very happy to meet your acquaintance. my father is also like yours in that he could very well be described as an abusive manipulative hypocritical megalomaniac control freak. what's the probablity there are two of those? kidding. the only acception to their similarity is that my father decided to join The Ministry...I was not allowed to dance or date outside of our so-called non-denomination. It was miserable other than I learned to sexualize the corporal punishment. kidding again. or AM i?
