I'm asking because earlier today while I was walking to class, a woman handed me a "trillion dollar bill". It was not until I read the back that I found out it was one of those religious…Continue

Heh, sounds like most Catholics.  There were plenty of interesting bits in my CCD classes, but the other half or so were just mind-numbing.  Mass itself was ... well, Catholic mass. The only variation from week to week is the homily. Everything else got old by the time I was 8 or 9.
I know some atheists who still go to UU or Humanist church services. I can't understand that sort of behavior. I was glad to be done with the whole thing once I was 18 and was able to refuse.

Actually now that I think about it, there were a lot of good movies in CCD, too. We watched Jesus Christ Superstar, at one point.

Other movies were unintentionally hilarious. I remember one movie about exorcism which was so clownish. The priest kept talking things up in the interview, and then they'd show the video footage, which completely failed to live up to his description.
"This demonic voice came out of her, which could never come out of a girl like her and could only be demonic."
"Actually, no, that sounds exactly like I would expect a fat girl growling deep in her throat to sound like."
Then there was a description of how the girl had levitated around the room, at one point ... but we won't show that footage, because it's too disturbing. Riiiiiiiiight ...

Another movie was about witches who had converted to Catholicism. There were these fantastic stories that these ex-witches told about the magic they had done and the interactions they had had with demons and with Satan. If any of it was even vaguely true, there would be a lot more witches out there than there are.

At least you're not submerged in it though, yeah. My brother-in-law does that nonsense at family dinners, on the rare occasions that my siblings and my mother all get together. I've never actually laughed during the prayer, but it's been close, a few times.
Actually, I've read the whole book straight through. It's good to be able to throw things back at Christians who think the Bible is worth something. "Not only does the Bible lack any kind of veracity or authority, but it doesn't even mean what you think it means."
I'm a bit of a mythology junkie.
There's very little good advice in that book, though. You have to strain it from so much bad advice that you'd be better off making it up from scratch.

Nice.  Not horribly bad, then.  I was raised Catholic, myself, but my parents were the sort who went to church EVERY ... SINGLE ... SUNDAY.  I became an altar boy just to have something to do during mass.

My mother still went a bit ape shit when I came out of the closet when I was 14 or so, though.  My father acted as a bit of a balance to her, though, since I get the feeling that he was kind of non-religious, himself, and only went to church because of my mother.

So, your family just kind of goes through the motions at church and never thinks or talks about it the rest of the week, sort of like my family was?

Wow, sounds like you're a bit of a cultural scramble, judging from your name and surname.  What sort of religious background did you break out of?  Or are you one of the lucky ones with non-religious parents?
