About Me:
I am an 80-year-old curmudgeon; I like the 1500s spelling best and definition:
"An ill-tempered (and frequently old) person full of stubborn ideas or opinions."
I changed from faith to science. I am a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, a survivor of breast cancer thanks to the fine diagnostic work and treatment at Cancer Care Northwest, which included surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Dreadful stuff, but a wake up to living each and every minute. Life is to remember the past, live in the present and remember a preferred future. One can be good without god! My family demonstrates it

Winter Solstice offers a time to look back on the past year to acknowledge my challenges and the things I chose to do to solve those problems. This recent past year was a very hard one for me with the death of my oldest son, Cary, a victim of cancer at the young age of 53 years and one month. This loss turned out to be harder on me than I imagined. Thankfully, Craig and Laura and their families walked these dark days with me.

After wallowing in that pain I turn my attention to the…

Part 4 Booms and busts punctuate the history of capitalism; it is a systemic problem.

Part 4 Booms and busts punctuate the history of capitalism; it is a systemic problem.

Remember General Motors, producer of automobiles? Over the last thirty years, General Motors created a subsidiary called GMAC, General Motors Acceptance Corporation. It is a bank. It lends money. It began by lending money to people to buy cars because their wages couldn’t pay for them. Then GMAC discovered they could make more money off the interest of the loan than they could make…

Part 3  We reached the limits of the kinds of capitalism this society can endure.

Turning, now, to the big business community, the last thirty years have been spectacular. Everything about the working class, with the introduction of computers, U.S. workers became more and more productive. We had a thirty-year period of rising labor productivity. Each year the worker produces more, and the wages stayed the same.

The gap between what the workers…

OK. Raised RCC and it still remains a mystery to me why or how my long dead parents managed to raise four heathens given they were, in fact devout RCC. Being, as I am, Irish, an atheist Irish man is somewhat of an isolate position. A majority here are what I would term functional atheists but nobody wants to admit that, in a fit of denial. Few will actually 'fess up to the reality. Thus, I reach out to other like minded folks at will.

Here's the link to my "How to Do It" post on putting up videos.  Problem is: YouTube has changed their layout (AGAIN!!!), though the SHARE link is pretty easy to find.  The problem is that, so far as I can tell, they don't offer automated sizing when generating the embed code, so you have to do it by hand.

The default width looks to be 560 and the height is 315 in their code.  Change these to 385 and 217, respectively when you're putting code into the comment section of a group and you should be in shape.  The larger size works for posts and "root" comments on posts.  If you have any further problems, please give a shout.

Thanks, Joan. It is funny, but in all my years as a theist, I never had a clearly defined purpose for my life. This, despite working as an actor, a magician, and an author. Suddenly, without the pressure of fulfilling some "divine purpose," I realized my aim in life is to bring joy to people. It has been for a long time. I just couldn't see it.

Frontline has a good documentary about the meth epidemic

My understanding is that pharmacutical labs in India send the base material to Mexican drug labs by the 50 gallon barrel.

Is meth still a problem , or has it been kept under controll?

Now that I'm seventy I feel I should be more outspoken about atheism.  Years ago, I stupidly got into a religious discussion with one of my kid's teacher.  When I pointed out the many atrocities, including genocide, that has been performed in the name of Christianity, she told me she wasn't "that kind of Christian."  "What kind is that?" I asked.  She replied, "the kind that forces others to believe as I do."  Once again I had to display my utter stupidity by making a joke of her response.  I told her that I thought that being a Christian who doesn't push their religion is like being a Hells Angel who doesn't drink, fight, or ride a motorcycle.  After I experienced the helplessness of being told by a police officer to, "sit down and shut" up in my own home, while a representative from social services conducted a welfare check, I shelved the idea of so sharing my beliefs.

Those who worship the heavenly rapist may be in charge but that don't make them right!  They can peddle salvation door-to-door, disturbing whoever they wish to, but if we try to point out the illogic of it all we're told, "No talking religion!"

Don't they claim that he got a girl pregnant without her permission?  Without her even knowing about it!  If that isn't rape I don't know what could be.  Why was she delivering the kid away from home and in a barn?  Because she was drummed out of her hometown for being a pregnant tramp that's why.  Forced into a loveless marriage for survival, she hung in there, she raised that child of rape.  Then, after everything that poor girl went through, he has him tortured to death right in front of her.  What in the hell could that girl ever have done to deserve that?

Makes me kinda understand why Catholics make such a big deal out of how cool Mary was.

Hi Joan,

It seems that drug addiction should be treated as a medical problem rather than a legal problem. I hear that about 80% of state prisoners are incarcerated for drug use.

I understand that Meth and Opiate addiction plagues rural America.

Sometimes my computer, internet connection, Ning and A/N  doesn't work well.

This topic would be a good discussion.
