Welcome, Mel! Glad you could join us. :D

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that's on your mind, Hang With Friends. You might also like Refugees from the Bible Belt, No Nonsense, Atheists who love Science!, Atheists in the Biological SciencesGeek & Nerd Haven and Atheist Writers.

I also recommend Eco-Logical and Climate Concerns, since the climate is changing so drastically.

After you've searched for topics of interest in "Groups" above and in the "Forums", don't forget to look at recent activity which hides along the right margin of the page all the way at the bottom.

Hmm, subcultures? Do you mean Pagan groups, and similar? I looked into that sort of thing, myself, in my late teens. Honestly, it was mostly to annoy my Catholic mother. If I had known that it would have bothered her as much if I just became more outspoken in my lack of belief, I could have saved myself a lot of time. The Pagans are generally more decent than Christians, in my experience, but not a whole lot more rational.

I feel your pain. I can just imagine what it's like, actually living in South Carolina. I've driven through plenty of times, on my way to Atlanta, and I've stopped off a few times, for various things. Rural North Carolina is pretty bad, but the three major urban centers are decent. South Carolina doesn't have as much in the way of urban centers, of course, so you haven't got as much to go on, down there.
