Why All-Knowingness is Impossible

Started this discussion. Last reply by Michael Penn Dec 24, 2017. 6 Replies

There is an argument by a philosopher named Roland Puccetti showing, convincingly, I think, that omniscience (i.e. all-knowingness) is impossible.  It is wonderfully called the "argument from…Continue

Euthyphro - how to argue how someone can be moral without God watching

Started this discussion. Last reply by Loren Miller Aug 21, 2017. 11 Replies

I wanted to share the following information with people, since most people are not familiar with Greek philosophy.  I had an American Atheists shirt on, while wandering in a shopping mall.  A Jewish…Continue

Michael Penn replied to P.'s discussion Why All-Knowingness is Impossible
"Also, all of this "knowing" is usually something out of Evangelical meetings where the "holy spirit" seems to run wild and they all had a good service. This is no more than the civilized man's version of tribal nonsense."

Loren Miller replied to P.'s discussion Why All-Knowingness is Impossible
"That old phrase heard too often from believers: "I know that I know that I know..." comes to mind here.  It's like a recursive subroutine, that calls itself, but hasn't a proper Boolean escape statement and thus runs on…"

Compelledunbeliever replied to P.'s discussion Why All-Knowingness is Impossible
"The Abrahamic God as described in the bible is anything but omniscient. The book would be better described as a parody of omniscience. I am not being snarky here. It often describes him as not "knowing wants happening or what will happen, and…"

P. replied to jlaz's discussion Is "God" possible?
"Here is how I can show that an all-knowing all-powerful god is impossible.  In order to be all-knowing, god has to know what he or she will be doing in 5 minutes.  If god knows what he or she will be doing in 5 minutes, she or he cannot…"

P. replied to Monte Pirlo's discussion Why I am done with religion
"Congratulations!  Both my parents have been atheists for the 45 years of my whole life, so I do not know what it is like to leave a religion.  I encourage you to help the homeless.  I once tried to volunteer helping the homeless, but…"

P. commented on Teresa Roberts's blog post Why Liberal Christians Annoy Me
"Another point I would raise is that liberal Christians think that their religion is a good thing.  The reality is that if their religion is a good thing then not having the religion is a bad thing.  By what means can something be said to…"

Welcome, P.! Glad you could join us. :D

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that’s on your mind, Hang With Friends.

I also recommend Eco-Logical and Climate Concerns, since the climate is changing so drastically. Writing to Congress is a group to share ideas so it's easy to write or call legislators.

After you’ve searched for topics of interest in “Groups” above and in the “Forums”, don’t forget to look at recent activity which hides along the right margin of the page all the way at the bottom.
