Pros and cons of home schooling?

Started this discussion. Last reply by jay H Apr 30. 3 Replies

In this country is some discussion if home schooling should be forbidden. I think that's a good idea - I abhor monocultures and a family that isolates the children is a monoculture. The quality of…Continue

I grew up in a fundie household in the 50s and 60s: parents, two brothers and myself. I quickly started to decode the things I was told. My mother said “we” when she meant herself and my father, my brothers said “we” when they meant “boys only”, and when my father said it, he meant himself, backed up by his god. It soon became clear that I was alone in my group.  I couldn’t be in a group with the girls at school…

project brother-in-law

We've been busy this year. Brother-in-law fell on his head in January and contracted brain damage..  So we went to the hospital (the rest of the family is dead or not interested) and kept contact with the staff, took decisions, shared information and did whatever was necessary. Then we went to his apartment and found that his cat was phobic about people, and the apartment was totally neglected, dirty and full of broken stuff. We found a cat-nanny who accepted the bizarre situation and tried…

Crash Course - measures

One of the things to do was to get rid of debt. Six years ago we lived in a starter flat that was almost paid off - and a hallucinating mad neighbour terrorized us into moving and buying this wonderful apartment. I'm happy here, but I realize better than before that we've got a rather big debt that cannot be paid off in a few years. O well, it cannot be helped.

Shopping is more expensive now, as I'm trying to build up a food stock. But it's also a training; we expect necessary things…

Crash Course

I have never been a big consumer - my bank account wouldn't hear of it - and so I favoured a simple lifestyle, buying only what I needed and trying to find no-nonsense durable goods that could serve me a long time. I worked at our rather fragile household budget, wondered what to do if serious trouble arrived - our luck still holds - but also wondered about the destruction of nature, the depletion of oil etc. and what would happen to this planet and its inhabitants before the sun…

Thank you!  Let me say you're not too old for POLLY, Plinius.  It's a fairly sophisticated construction for YA, but, in any case, the popularity of the genre among adults has been much remarked on and discussed in recent years.  I've written about it on my blog.  There are some good links.  You may be interested:

Thank you for the kind offer, and friendship.  I will gladly accept friendship, but my rejection of cell phones is only partly financial.  I really detest the things!

The arrogance of people who use them in public places, and thoughtlessly disturb everyone around them with meaningless chatter, are a symptom of a sick (as in "terminally ill") society.  When I was working in an electronics store 20+ years ago, I swore an oath on my cats that I would never own one of the pesky things.  I did consider getting a very inexpensive "emergency" phone while I was commuting to work, but now that I can no longer drive a car, or own one, I don't need a phone to call the Auto Club.

Our land line may go out once a year, and I can live with that.  and,if I stop breathing, I DO NOT WANT to be revived, anyway.  I'm wearing a MedicAlert bracelet that advises EMTs NOT to resuscitate me EVER.

That may sound stupid, but I have heard too many stories of people who have had CPR performed on them, and "come back to life" permanently brain damaged.  NOT moi!

But many thanks for the offer; that was a kind and very thoughtful thing to do.  You just didn't know about my peculiar weirdness regarding cell phones.  <3

Thanks for joining Hang With Friends, Chris. :D I thought I was the only one who liked tap water, hah-hah. I'd go to parties and get some instead of soda or wine.
