I Believe

I believe in time,
matter, and energy,
which make up the whole of the world.
I believe in reason, evidence and the human mind,
the only tools we have;
they are the product of natural forces
in a majestic but impersonal universe,
grander and richer than we can imagine,
a source of endless opportunities for discovery.
I believe in the power of doubt;
I do not seek out reassurances,
but embrace the question,
and strive to challenge my own beliefs.
I accept human mortality.
We have but one life,
brief and full of struggle,
leavened with love and community,
learning and exploration,
beauty and the creation of
new life, new art, and new ideas.
I rejoice in this life that I have,
and in the grandeur of a world that preceded me,
and an earth that will abide without me.

My Atheist Anthem

Posted on February 11, 2011 at 9:42pm 5 Comments

This is a response to one of those emails that was floating around a while back. It was a poem, supposedly written by a 6th grade student, about liberals taking god out of everything U.S.

It's a little more aggressive than my usual approach but I was a little miffed. Since then my brother stopped sending me emails. Hm.

Wringing Out The Dread

Posted on November 29, 2008 at 12:36pm 4 Comments

An acquaintance of mine recently brought her 12-year old daughter to see me and talk about the passing of the little girl's grandfather. The mother was unsure of what to say about death and the afterlife and wanted me to give her my perspective, which I thought odd due to my atheism. Nevertheless, I told her how I view death and my thoughts on what comes next. Hopefully, it gave her some comfort. Pre-teens are hard to read sometimes and don't always respond to people they don't know… Continue

Phishing With God

I am sure we are all familiar with the vast array of scams on the internet but this, in particular, caught my eye.

When I opened my inbox this morning I was greeted with this:

Being an inquisitive sort, I went to visit their site and see what they are about. The first thing to strike me as odd was the lack of any link to tell you what this organization is about. They begin, immediately, asking for personal information without so much… Continue

The Mabel Tainter is amazing!  I haven't lived in Menomonie very long, but they apparently restored things just before I moved there.  I got to see it with all new seats and..well, having not seen it before, I'm not sure what all was new.

Thanks for the note!  I hope you're having a great weekend!

Great! I'm a member of Rationalists' Association. We promote marriages without silly Hindu or Muslim rituals that requires priests.Just a vow to lead a joint life of love and companionship without any legal or religious bindings. Do friends need marriage rituals to remain friends for life?

Hi, are you really a reverend? How do you manage-- I mean what do you preach? Here in India no priest would join the atheist club.Please tell me about yourself-- your profession
