"Thanks for the yahoo group Sonja, I just submitted my request to join. It would be great to head into a few meetups of like-minded individuals. My wife is a somewhat theist; it's not a major problem and she doesn't try to force any…"
"A grass roots effort may work, but we're too scattered and fragmented IMO to make a big difference. Why come out as an atheist in a small town full of True Christians (TM)? But maybe it's just me, I tend to think too big sometimes :) But…"

"We should build a tree house (joking). That doesn't sound bad at all, and I wonder about possibly a member drive to find all of those still in the closet. I mean hell, my neighbors keep leaving religious crap on my door, may as well leave some…"

Welcome to Atheist Nexus with its 8300+ good friends.
We wish you all the best in your forthcoming Ph.D. viva voce.
As a keen atheist, perhaps try joining groups like the busy discussion group “Origins: Universe, Life, Humans, Evolution, Religion.....”.
I have been running a discussion there (72 posts) about being "Proud to be Atheist" because we should all be inwardly proud (and those who can, outwardly loudly proud),
seeing that atheists and humanists hold the intellectual high ground over the pathetic beliefs of the superstitious god grovellers enslaved by the fictions of narrow-minded clergy who control their brains and lives.
