As I am still in the atheist's closet, I still attend a Christian church with friends and family in Houston. It's a fairly large church with several thousand people. It's also televised. I pass my time analyzing everything our pastor says. His ideology made perfect sense when I was a believer in God. But now, I see that he is nothing more than a great speaker. All the evidence he comes up with can be refuted. The only thing is, no one is up on stage asking cold hard questions. He pours out his beliefs and the crowd accepts it for he is a pastor who studies God more than they. No one would dare question his knowledge. I believe his morals and analogies could work just the same without mentioning God. Before the 2008 elections took place, our pastor spent the whole sermon preaching about politics and making the right decisions. He slipped God in the mix but I found it completely unnecessary. We don't have morals because of God. We naturally have morals and use God as a structural tool to follow. And I certainly do not think I'm the only atheist in this church. I'm one of several thousand attendees. I'm positive there are people in the same boat. I just hope the rest snap the hell out of it and enjoy their free lives unrestrained from the eyes of their dictator.

If your daughter at least someone around that is rational, especially a father, think the odds are good she will grow up rational herself, and in fact will thank you for it. My kids are all grown, but each has come to me and thanked me for teaching them only to think for themselves. They have seen the struggles of their friends have had with their religious families.

It really is one of the dirty little secrets of Christianity. They teach you that to not believe is the lowest form of life, and that you will lose the love of god and your friends and your family plus spend eternity being burned alive. There is little more effective at keeping people in line.

Personally I think your wife may come around in time, if you just gently continue to point out the obvious contradictions and impossibilities in a very patient way, but as for the others. It always seems to come down to a choice between keeping certain relationships, or living your life while being true to yourself. You have no control over what someone else does when you decide to be true to yourself. But you have to ask yourself if you ever really had a relationship with them in the first place, if they can't accept who you are.

I wish you luck and keep us posted.

Yeah, you've got quite a battle ahead of you, and it will probably go on for years. I'm curious, though, are your friends the fundie type? If they aren't, they may not be so quick to reject you (especially if you've been friends for a long time). As far as coming out of the closet, you're doing yourself a disservice by living a lie. It will, and I speak from personal experience, be a relief to be honest about your beliefs. If you are interested, the American Atheists site has a "coming out" advice page at Hope it helps.

Congrats on joining the Nexus and seeing reality.

Welcome to Atheist Nexus and the world of commonsense.

Being an atheist, you are a rational thinker. Well done for seeing that atheism and science, not religion, hold the answers to the world, its problems and its origins.
